Job Overview

The Emergency Preparedness Specialist supports the development and maintenance of the Emergency Management Program using an "All Hazards" approach. Responsibilities include training, planning, grant coordination, committee participation, and collaboration with internal and external agencies at organizational, local, regional, state, and national levels.

Prerequisites
  • Bachelor's degree required; an additional 4 years of relevant experience may substitute the degree.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in supporting emergency response or in disaster preparedness, environmental health and safety, fire safety, and/or incident command systems.
  • Completion of FEMA(NIMS) courses (IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800) required within six months of hire.
  • Completion of FEMA Professional Development Series and/or Professional Continuity Practitioner preferred.
Qualifications
  • Experience presenting educational materials to diverse audiences preferred.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision, in stressful situations, and with short deadlines.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and Joint Commission requirements; experience in a public‑sector healthcare setting.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with diverse populations.
  • Professional grooming and demeanor.
  • Organizational teamwork and program development skills.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies at all levels.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced environment and maintain service levels when resources are limited.
  • Healthcare training and clinical experience preferred.
  • Capability to work effectively with department personnel and medical staff.
  • Strong client‑relations development capability.
  • Adaptability to maintain or improve service levels during resource constraints.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Support programs and functions related to the Emergency Management Program across the Service Area.
  • Implement and maintain Emergency Management standards for all departments.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Inform staff about changes in code standards, procedures, and other relevant updates.
  • Conduct ongoing educational needs assessments and encourage departmental personnel to pursue continuing education.
  • Review and revise Emergency Management plans, policies, and procedures annually to meet regulatory standards.
  • Support the design, development, maintenance, and testing of business continuity and disaster recovery plans for each critical functional area.
  • Assist leadership with strategic planning for emergency operations teams.
  • Collaborate with Information Technology and other business units to coordinate critical business processes for readiness.
  • Provide detailed work plans, status reports, and training assistance to business units.
  • Conduct safety audits as a member of the Environment of Care rounding team.
  • Contribute to a productive work environment and maintain open communication with VMC physicians and staff.
  • Design and implement quality service and performance improvement processes aligned with department goals.
  • Coordinate employee‑related functions to support VMC goals and objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
