Code Compliance Inspector

The City of Renton is recruiting for a Code Compliance Inspector within the Community & Economic Development (CED) Division. This position is responsible for enforcing provisions of the Renton Municipal Code and resolving violations related to nuisance properties, building and zoning standards, vegetation, temporary structures, and public safety concerns. Inspectors conduct field investigations, document violations, and communicate required corrective actions with professionalism and clarity.

The role requires a balance of fieldwork and office-based case management, including report writing, documentation, and coordination with partner departments. This is a fast-paced, community-facing position that supports Renton’s commitment to safety, livability, and consistent code enforcement.

• Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning or related field.
• Minimum 2 years of code enforcement experience.
• Or minimum 6 years of relevant education and experience.
• Valid Drivers’ License.
• Successful passing of a required driving record check.
• Successful passing of a required background check.

The City of Renton supports workers performing in a hybrid capacity (partial telework/in-office) where job responsibilities can be performed remotely. This position may be eligible for a telework arrangement, up to 2 days remote, based on the operational needs of the City and specific Department. Regardless of job title or telework arrangement, City of Renton employees must reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to their worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

• Perform inspections to assure safety and welfare of residents, protect public infrastructure and maintain property values; verify compliance with approved plans; initiate enforcement proceedings for non-compliance.
• Research planning files for specific projects and review comments from the Hearing Examiner and Zoning Administrator; provide or deny approval to begin construction based on compliance with required action by the owner, building or contractor.
• Investigate complaints regarding potential code violations related to hazards, nuisance abatement, safety, noise, and land use violations.
• Research applicable code sections, contact violators in person and initiate compliance procedures; gather and preserve evidence asrequiredfor legal proceedings.
• Provide technical information andassistancein person, in writing or on the telephone to the public; explain and interpret municipal codes.
• Review site and building plans for compliance with regulations.
• Communicate with a variety of City departments, State and County agencies, contractors and others concerning case preparation, file research, business licensing and code compliance.
• File complaints for Code violation in court of jurisdiction.
• Prepare and maintain records, reports and statistics related to violations.
• Testify in court.
