Job Overview

The Dietitian is responsible for quality patient nutrition care management through assessments, recommendations, nutrition care orders, diet education, and multidisciplinary communication. The role serves as a resource and role model within the Food Management and Nutrition Services department.

Prerequisites
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) by the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics with 0‑5 years experience.
  • Certified Dietitian in Washington State, obtained within three months of passing the Registration Examination and during the probationary period.
  • Effective verbal and written communication in English.
  • Willingness to work weekends and holidays.
  • Professional appearance in line with organizational standards.
  • Basic computer skills.

  • Capability to communicate and work effectively with patients across all age groups.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in day‑to‑day operations of FMNS, including relief coverage and schedule modifications.
  • Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior toward patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary work environment per department standards.
  • Contribute to the department’s professional image and quality food service.
  • Manage time and resources, including flexing hours during low census periods.
  • Assist in reviewing and updating written materials, displays, and computer tools.
  • Recognize and implement activities appropriate to patient needs and demonstrate knowledge of issues related to developmental age, maintaining ongoing education in pediatric, adult, and geriatric nutrition.
  • Adjust meal plans according to patient developmental age and cultural needs.
  • Engage in professional growth to ensure competency.
  • Cooperate with other health‑care team members and FMNS to provide optimal patient care.
  • Participate in marketing and promotion of the hospital and FMNS through active engagement.
  • Maintain professional communication with physicians and office staff.
  • Screen and assess patients per departmental standards, update diet orders, and record laboratory data.
  • Provide nutritional care for Level 3 and Level 4 risk patients and document promptly.
  • Provide leadership through direction, motivation, and monitoring of FMNS employees.
  • Serve as a nutrition resource for all FMNS team members.
  • Instruct patients on diets and nutrition per protocols.
  • Communicate written information on diets.
  • Engage in FMNS performance improvement via data collection and monitoring.
  • Forward customer feedback to appropriate persons for action.
  • Complete assigned jobs and other related duties as required.
  • Participate in monthly audits, including patient rounding and productivity reports.
  • If FTE ≥ 0.4, serve on a hospital‑wide committee.
  • For Dietitians working 1:1 with outpatients, BLS certification required within 90 days of employment.
Physical Demands, Environment and Working Conditions
  • Extensive walking (65%+ of shift).
  • Lifting moderate to heavy weights (5‑20 kg).
  • Corrected vision and hearing within normal range required.
  • Ability to handle multiple simultaneous demands.
  • Frequent changes and interruptions to respond to requests.
  • Independent problem‑solving, compiling information, and explaining department procedures.
  • Frequent trips from FMNS Department to patient units and rooms, charting, and maintaining accurate records.
