TITLE:

Senior Design and Construction Manager

JOB OVERVIEW:
The Senior Design and Construction Manager is responsible for the development, management, and execution of capital construction projects across hospital, outpatient, and non-patient care environments in accordance with VMC strategic initiatives. This position oversees and manages various multidisciplinary project teams consisting of internal staff, design consultants, contractors, and vendors to ensure successful outcomes. Assigned projects range in scope and complexity to include major and minor capital projects, deferred maintenance, critical infrastructure, and repair and alteration.

Responsibilities include leading projects through all phases including programming, planning, design, bidding, pre-construction, construction, occupancy, and closeout, and effectively overseeing budgets, timelines, risks, and delivery of all assigned capital projects.

DEPARTMENT:
Construction Management

WORK HOURS:

Typically, Monday-Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30PM, with flexibility based on project needs. Occasional availability outside regular hours (early mornings, evenings, weekends) is required to meet project requirements and maintain on-site presence.

REPORTS TO:

Director, Facilities Planning, Design and Construction

PREREQUISITES:

* Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field required. An additional four years of relevant and applicable experience may substitute for the degree requirement.

* Minimum eight years of qualified experience involving planning, designing, and managing construction projects to include three years of experience with healthcare projects required.

* Registration as an Architect or Professional Engineer in the State of Washington preferred.

* Proficiency in MS Office, MS Project, or similar project management software, and MS Excel required.

Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Smartsheet, and knowledge of as-built drawing management preferred.

* Knowledge of Washington State building codes, healthcare regulatory requirements (FGI Guidelines, DOH), and permitting processes applicable to healthcare construction.

* Experience managing construction budgets and contractor agreements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Knowledge of the principles and theories of general construction trade practices, construction contracts, project management, architectural/engineering firm negotiations, specifications, and project scope/design development.

* Understanding of materials and methods utilized in electrical, mechanical, and structural systems in healthcare environments.

* Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop project teams, including internal staff, consultants, and contractors.

* Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications across all building disciplines.

* Ability to independently manage complex, high-value projects while collaborating effectively

with construction management staff, stakeholders, vendors, and contractors, with proven skills in conflict resolution and problem-solving.

* Exceptional communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written, effective with a diverse audience including senior leadership, clinical staff, and external stakeholders.

* Strategic thinking and decision-making abilities with demonstrated skills in resource allocation, risk management, and budget oversight.

* Demonstrates energy, empathy, compassion, problem solving, and active listening. Provides leadership through example and commitment to team development.
