Job Overview

The staff RN is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. This individual provides safe, quality care to these patients utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Assess, guide, direct, and facilitate workflow on the unit; recognize when charge nurse duties are required and assume that role.
  • Make staff assignments that reflect patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and the necessity of admit, transfer, and discharge activity.
  • Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel regarding unit/department/hospital policies, procedures, standards, and annual goals and objectives.
  • Integrate new staff and agency staff into the unit culture.
  • Act as a leader and role model for clinical staff.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for unit staff, demonstrate safe use of patient care equipment, and teach others.
  • Identify RN resources for LPN, PCA, and MST as necessary.
  • Monitor and evaluate nursing care given to each patient by direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
  • Assess unit/environmental safety during patient rounds and report/correct deficiencies.
  • Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; routinely monitor documentation and compliance.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills and respond to patient and family concerns/complaints.
  • Report significant events (patient, staff, physician, visitor) to administrative supervisors/manager and activate the chain of command per policy.
  • Provide input into performance appraisal of clinical staff on assigned shift by documenting feedback and/or communicating concerns to manager/supervisor.
  • Evaluate and provide adequate coverage for breaks.
  • Maintain fiscal responsibility by monitoring and adjusting staffing during shift and determining staffing needs for the following shift through sound clinical judgment.
  • Accept personal responsibility to maintain competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
  • Communicate and collaborate with bed placement and the clinical resource to ensure expedited clinical placement.
Qualifications
  • BSN preferred; current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Washington.
  • Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months' experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • AHA BLS for healthcare providers required.
  • Preferred for advancement to Charge Nurse role: BSN, two years' practice in clinical nursing/leadership, and unit‑specific prerequisites (see addendum).
  • Demonstrates leadership skills with ability to lead and manage a team, utilize clinical judgment, inquiry, innovation, and systems thinking.
  • Able to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Adheres to the Professional Appearance Policy.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills that are community‑centered, compassionate, and meet the needs of diverse and vulnerable populations.
  • Can communicate and work effectively with patients of all age groups.
  • Practices in a caring environment with excellent customer service skills.
  • Functions within ANA Standards and the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Proficient in electronic information communication (order entry, e‑mail, computer documentation).
  • Self‑directed in advancing professional practice through continuing education and research.
Physical/Mental Demands and Working Conditions

Must provide safe patient handling per VMC guidelines; lift from floor to overhead, carry up to 40 pounds, participate in team lifting, operate patient lifting equipment safely. Requires stooping, bending, reaching, crouching, and squatting; standing and walking for extensive periods. Full body range of motion, manual/finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, corrected vision, normal hearing, and color discrimination are required.
