Job Overview

The Registered Nurse in Critical Care Unit is responsible for providing safe, quality care to a group of patients, utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice. The RN reports to the Nurse Manager and may assume charge nurse duties as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses, guides, directs, and facilitates workflow on the unit; assumes charge nurse role when necessary.
  • Assigns staff based on patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Mentors staff, float, and agency personnel regarding unit, department, and hospital policies, procedures, standards, and annual goals.
  • Integrates new staff and agency staff into the unit culture.
  • Acts as a leader and role model for clinical staff.
  • Serves as a clinical resource to unit staff, demonstrates safe use of patient care equipment, and teaches others.
  • Identifies as a resource for other care teams as needed.
  • Monitors and evaluates nursing care given to each patient through direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
  • Assesses unit and environmental safety during patient rounds, reports and corrects deficiencies.
  • Maintains awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; monitors documentation for compliance and facilitates rapid turnaround.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills.
  • Responds to patient and family concerns or complaints.
  • Reports significant events to supervisors and activates the chain of command per policy.
  • Provides input into performance appraisal of clinical staff by documenting feedback and communicating concerns.
  • Evaluates and provides adequate coverage for breaks.
  • Maintains fiscal responsibility by monitoring and adjusting staffing during shift and determining staffing needs for the next shift using sound clinical judgment.
  • Accepts personal responsibility to maintain competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
  • Collaborates with bed placement and clinical resource to expedite clinical placement.
Qualifications
  • BSN preferred; current RN license in Washington.
  • Completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or at least six months RN experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Leadership skills – ability to lead/manage a team, use clinical judgment, inquiry, innovation, and systems thinking.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Adherence to the Professional Appearance Policy.
  • Effective interpersonal skills – compassionate, community-centered, and able to meet diverse and vulnerable populations.
  • Ability to communicate with all age groups.
  • Excellent customer service orientation.
  • Knowledge of ANA Standards and Nurse Practice Act.
  • Electronic communication skills (order entry, e‑mail, computer documentation).
  • Self‑directed in advancing professional practice through continuing education and research.
  • Physical/mental demands: safe patient handling, lift up to 40 lbs, ability to stoop, bend, reach, squat, stand and walk for extended periods, corrected vision and hearing, color perception.
Unit‑Specific Requirements
  • ACLS & PALS within 3 months of hire.
  • NIHSS certification within 3 months of hire.
  • TNCC within 12 months of hire.
  • ENPC certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Minimum one year of experience in Emergency/Critical Care nursing; additional certifications may be required for specific units (e.g., NRP, AWHONN, C‑EFM).
Preferred Advancement to Charge Nurse Role
  • BSN preferred.
  • Minimum two years clinical nursing/leadership experience.
  • Unit‑specific prerequisites (see addendum).
Compensation

Salary Range: $46.94 – $85.76 per hour, DOE. Sign‑on Incentive: $20,000.
