Purpose and Scope

Ensures quality patient care while maintaining cost‑effective clinical operations in compliance with all legal, compliance, and regulatory requirements. As the Charge Nurse, manages daily decisions to maintain continuity of care, patient and staff safety, and oversees the delivery of safe, effective, quality outcomes.
PrincipalDuties and Responsibilities
- Provide daily guidance, support, and direction to direct patient care staff, including informal feedback and formal input for annual performance evaluations.
- Participate in department staffing and appropriate hiring, firing, and disciplinary actions; recommend disciplinary action to the Facility Administrator.
- Ensure compliance with all company, facility, and regulatory procedures and policies.
- Approve or disapprove time or personnel schedule changes in the absence of the Facility Administrator, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.
- Participate in patient care plan meetings.
- Maintain current dialysis practices through participation in all scheduled in‑services.
- Train and orient staff as necessary.
- Observe and guide direct patient care staff for proper technique and adherence to facility policies.
- Promote compliance with OSHA programs to maintain a safe work environment.
- Manage overall shift operations efficiently.
- Conduct monthly staff meetings with the Facility Administrator to inform staff of changes in patient care needs or operations.
- Meet routinely with the Facility Administrator to discuss personnel and patient care status, issues, and information.
- Supervise documentation of patient information.
- Coordinate Charge Nurse duties with staff RNs acting in relief charge capacity.
- Assess daily patient care needs and develop and distribute patient care assignments appropriately.
- Assume primary responsibility in emergency situations.
- Respond to dialysis treatments and communicate concerns to the rounding physician; implement directed changes in patient care.
- Monitor and supervise patient care activity during dialysis and assist as necessary.
- Collaborate with the direct patient care team to benefit patient care.
- Continuously monitor patient condition for potential complications associated with dialysis.
- Administer medications to patients per physician orders.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and resource for staff members.
- Supervise participation in short‑ and long‑term care plans.
- Admit new patients according to facility procedure.
- Educate patients and families about End Stage Renal Disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medication.
- Supervise safe and effective use of all equipment involved in direct patient care and operate emergency equipment when needed.
- Perform required testing, verification, and initial the checklist for startup and shutdown procedures per the Technical Services Manual.
- Complete Nurse’s Technical Training Program/Water Quality Facility.
- Assist with special projects, interviewing of potential staff, and promotion of efficient use of medical supplies.
- Attend and participate in monthly Quality Assurance meetings.
The role involves desk and computer work, interaction with patients, staff, and physicians, and travel between assigned facilities. The work environment is typical of a health‑care facility with moderate noise levels and temperature control. Employees may be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases/materials and are required to take the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, though reasonable accommodation may be considered for color‑blind candidates.
Education- Graduate of an accredited nursing school (R.N.).
- Must be registered and licensed to practice in the applicable state.
- Minimum of 12 months of nursing experience, with at least 6 months in clinical nursing care of dialysis patients.
- Medical/surgical nursing preferred.
- Supervisory or management experience preferred.
- Certified in CPR or completed CPR certification.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
