Job Responsibilities

Provide safe, quality nursing care to a group of patients for a designated time frame, using the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assess, guide, direct, and facilitate workflow on the unit, and assume charge responsibilities when needed.
  • Make staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and unit activity.
  • Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel regarding policies, procedures, standards, and goals.
  • Integrate new staff and agency staff into the unit culture.
  • Lead and serve as a role model for clinical staff.
  • Act as a clinical resource, demonstrating safe equipment use and teaching others.
  • Identify resource RNs for LPNs, PCAs, and MSTs as necessary.
  • Monitor and evaluate nursing care through direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
  • Assess unit/environmental safety, reporting and correcting deficiencies.
  • Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts, monitoring documentation compliance.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills and respond to patient/family concerns.
  • Report significant events to supervisors and activate the chain of command per policy.
  • Provide input into performance appraisal of clinical staff on the shift.
  • Evaluate and provide adequate break coverage.
  • Maintain fiscal responsibility by monitoring staffing and determining future shift needs with sound judgment.
  • Carry personal responsibility to maintain competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
  • Collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite placement.
  • Conduct bedside shift reports and shift safety interventions.
Prerequisites
  • BSN preferred.
  • Current licensure as RN in Washington.
  • Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program or six months experience as an RN.
  • ACLS BLS for healthcare providers required.
Preferred Qualifications for Advancement to Charge Nurse
  • BSN.
  • Two years practice in clinical nursing/leadership in area of responsibility preferred.
  • Unit specific prerequisites (see addendum).

Unique Physical/Mental Demands and Working Conditions

Provide safe patient handling per VMC guidelines; must be able to lift from floor to overhead, carry items up to 40 lb, participate in team lifting, operate patient lifting equipment, stoop, bend, reach, crouch, and squat. Requires standing and walking for extended periods, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, corrected vision, hearing within normal range, and color discrimination.

  • Emergency Department RN
    • ACLS & PALS within 3 months of hire
    • NIHSS certification within 3 months of hire
    • TNCC within 12 months of hire
    • ENPC certification within 12 months of hire
    • One year of experience in Emergency nursing or successful completion of ED residency
  • Emergency Department Resident
    • ACLS & PALS within 3 months of hire
    • NIHSS certification within 3 months of hire
    • TNCC within 12 months of hire
    • ENPC certification within 12 months of hire
  • Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
