Job Description

Prerequisites
  • High School Graduate or equivalent (G.E.D) preferred.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license and ability to be insured by VMC's carrier.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a Security Officer, Law Enforcement and/or Military Service preferred. Excellent customer service skills will be considered.
  • Ability to comprehend and translate the Revised Code of Washington.
  • Basic keyboarding skills (25 wpm) and experience using Windows applications preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification or obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • No convictions of any crime other than misdemeanor traffic violations.
  • Must successfully pass Work Steps pre‑hire screening for minimum physical requirements.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to spell accurately and write/type legibly.
  • Able to multitask and carry out assignments independently, exercising good judgment.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills, able to work independently.
  • Capable of handling telephone calls and personal interactions with tact, poise, courtesy and respect.
  • Neat and well‑groomed in appearance, following hospital personnel standards.
  • Demonstrates reliable attendance and job performance.

Physical Demands, Environment, and Working Conditions

On an occasional basis must be able to provide safe patient handling as defined in VMC's Safe Patient Handling guidelines to safely and appropriately transfer patients. Must be able to push patients in wheelchairs, participate in team lifting, and operate patient lifting equipment. Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds, stand or sit for extended periods, stoop, bend, reach, crouch, and squat, and have full body range of motion.

Must be able to walk across campus, climb stairs, traverse rooftops, restrain and apprehend individuals, and perform normal security business after exertion. Vision and hearing must be within normal range. Must be flexible, willing to work multiple hospital settings, potentially indoors and outdoors, and exposure to weather or communicable diseases. Must be available during inclement weather to assist with transportation and de‑icing duties.

Will cover other assigned duties including ED station coverage, shuttle bus operation, and vehicle maintenance.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Provide reasonable security and safety for visitors, patients, employees, and physicians at Valley Medical Center.
  • Enforce administrative policies, prevent crimes against property, and perform initial investigations as needed.
  • Open and close buildings as appropriate for shift; patrol exterior and interior per assigned shift.
  • Monitor CCTV system and operate electronic monitoring equipment.
  • Communicate with environmental services and facilities for appearance issues.
  • Maintain vehicles (gas, oil, fluid levels) and keep them clean when requested.
  • Provide escorts when needed and open/operate Command Center until relieved.
  • Enforce parking violations in parking lots and garage.
  • Deliver fire education to all staff on all shifts.
  • Provide traffic control and perform security duties around construction projects.
  • Assist patients with directions, answering questions, and acting as liaison with other departments.
  • Answer incoming calls and provide assistance to ED patients and visitors.
  • Issue badges to staff and visitors.
  • Communicate issues to management when unable to resolve or provide service recovery.
  • Participate in workflow design or process improvement work groups as assigned.
  • Use all manuals, contacts, and information within the Security office as a resource for accurate information.
  • Maintain confidential patient information and view information only on a need‑to‑know basis.
  • Demonstrate awareness of cost containment and suggest improvements.
  • Perform all job functions in a manner consistent with Valley's Service Culture Guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned to facilitate patient safety, timely throughput, and excellent customer service.
