Journey Tech I - Firestop

Performs the full range of work involved in the installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, modification and operational checks and testing of specialty systems at Valley Medical Center and associated clinics.

• Installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, modification, operational checks and testing of specialty firestop systems.
• Follow maintenance schedules, inspections, work orders, diagnose systems or equipment malfunctions and repairs as necessary.
• Maintain medical center buildings in good working order and appearance to VMC standards by applying the correct product to the respective surface.
• Apply knowledge of firestop theory and design to devise solutions for operating or repair problems.
• Perform assigned duties during drills and emergencies.
• Employ skill on architectural drawings, specifications, and schematics of carpentry systems.
• Assist Facility Manager and Leadman to comply with all regulatory standards and inspections, both public and private.
• Assist with projects as needed.
• Coordinate inventory of tools.
• Plan and lay out work utilizing sketches and specifications, determine required tools, estimate materials or parts needed, diagnose and locate malfunctions, disassemble, repair, replace, service, and adjust as required.
• Serve as a resource to coworkers learning new fire stopping skills and with department operations.

• High School graduate or equivalent (preferred).
• Washington State driver's license and a proven good driving record.
• Five (5) years experience in a healthcare setting (preferred).
• Firestop Instructional Training Certification Level 2 (FIT2) preferred.
• Knowledge of ASTM Fire Stop Codes.
• Knowledge of NFPA 101, International Building Code, and International Fire Codes relating to fire barriers and smoke barriers.
• Knowledge of passive fire protection components including fire barriers, fire stopping, fire dampers, fire rate glazing, fire doors, and hardware.
• Ability to work in a team setting and collaborate effectively with other shop personnel.
• Effective communication skills in oral and written form, including with a diverse population.
• Regular and punctual attendance history.

• Basic computer skills and ability to use technology.
• Organizational and time‑management skills.
• Experience or training in fire stopping.
• Ability to set priorities, produce accurate work, and meet deadlines.
• Capacity to manage a wide variety of duties and tasks.

Capability for extensive bending, lifting, walking, and handling hazardous substances. Must lift 75 pounds waist‑high regularly and sometimes heavier items; required to stand, stoop, kneel, and bend, and to work overhead, stretched, cramped, and awkward positions, ladders, and scaffolds. Requires use of a properly fitted respirator while performing work. Must read, write, and speak English and maintain a professional manner when dealing with employees and the public.

Must work inside and outside in all types of weather, exposed to sudden temperature changes, dampness, water, mud, and fumes. Potential exposure to electrical burns, infections, chemicals, gases, bruises, cuts, electric shocks, dust, dirt, and skin and lung irritation; highest risk of injury from falls or power tool use. When working in hazardous locations, the employee must utilize proper safety clothing, gear, and equipment.
