The Government of Guyana (GoG) through the Ministry of Public Works and Communications has taken up the Upgrading, Management and Construction of Linden Lethem Road under Government National Development Strategic policy. The National Strategy Plan identifies the Georgetown to Lethem Road and Rail as the essential North-South link in the overall National Transport Network of Guyana. It will join the Rupununi area of the hinterland with the Coastal belt and provide access to the deep-water port of Georgetown and the inland port of Linden.
The areas influenced by the project are Upper Demerara, Mabura Hill, Kurupukari and the Rupununi. The Government of Guyana deems it important to complete Feasibility and Environmental studies and preparation of Preliminary Engineering Design studies for Linden Lethem Road. GoG selected Bechtel Corporation to provide 30% engineering services and cost estimate for Linden Lethem Road, RAIL and Deep-water port facility.
The position will be part of Bechtel's Guyana Project Execution Team and will be based in New Amsterdam (1 position) and Lethem (1 position), Guyana. The successful candidate will work independently and report to the project's Geotechnical Engineering Lead or their designee, liaising with geotechnical engineers/engineering geologists and Bechtel's Geotechnical Manager or designee. Field oversight and coordination of geotechnical investigations for excavations, earthworks, slope stability, retaining systems, foundations, roads, bridges, and port facilities will be required, including reviews of investigation method statements, field investigations, laboratory testing, and coordination with geotechnical investigation agencies in Guyana.
This field assignment is expected to extend for 6 months in Guyana.
- Reviews, scope of works and technical specifications for field investigation and laboratory works.
- Ensures that technical requirements are enforced in the field and in the laboratory.
- Coordinates and oversees the work of Contractors performing field and laboratory investigations.
- Interfaces with field representatives from design consultants.
- Maintains regular communication with the project's Geotechnical Engineering Lead.
- An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology with a minimum of 8 years of field experience, or a B.S. in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology with minimum 10 years of experience. Degrees must be from an accredited institution.
- Professional registration is preferred.
- Demonstrable advanced proficiency in geotechnical software (e.g., gINT, Plaxis, LPILE, Slope/W) and hands-on experience in execution of geotechnical investigations and construction.
- Broad knowledge of geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics.
- Knowledge of subsurface investigation and testing methodology, including field and laboratory techniques and reporting requirements.
- Broad knowledge of processes in the field of engineering and field engineering for large-scale projects.
- Knowledge of health and safety requirements in large-scale construction projects.
- Proficiency in English.
