Bechtel is the licensing, engineering, procurement, and construction partner on Terra Power’s Natrium team. Selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for its Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, Natrium is participating in a DOE initiative to re-establish U.S. leadership in nuclear energy that provides matching funding to industry to design and build an operational advanced reactor. Terra Power, a leading advanced generation technology company founded by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, will be deploying its 345 MWe sodium fast reactor (SFR), called Natrium.

The Natrium plant features an advanced, cost-competitive reactor design that is safer, simpler, easier, and less costly to construct, less expensive to operate, and able to provide energy that is competitive with fossil fuels. It also features an innovative molten salt energy storage system designed to be complementary to solar and wind power by evening out the peaks and valleys in production when the sun is not shining, or the wind is not blowing.

With the reactor and energy storage output combined, the plant can produce more than 500 MWe of power.

Other Team Natrium partners include GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Energy Northwest, Pacifi Corp, and Duke Energy, along with support from a number of national laboratories and universities. This DOE Program has the potential to be the largest funding program for advanced nuclear power in U.S. history and will shape the future of nuclear energy for decades.

This position is for a Senior Systems Engineer (SE) to execute and lead systems engineering activities including requirements management, organization, validation, and verification of complex design requirements, within a model-based systems engineering environment for various clients. The SE plays a critical role in the delivery of the Requirements Management and Model-Based Systems Engineering program for Bechtel work products and designs, as well as for coordination of the scope and integration of work with internal and external stakeholders.

The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, a can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs. This position will be responsible for executing systems engineering work assignments concerned with specialized unique engineering requirements in a global business unit. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope, and may involve development of novel concepts, approaches, and solutions.

This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and will require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.

• Evaluates, selects, and applies standard Systems Engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications
• Establishes means of verifying requirements implementation, including acceptance criteria
• Develops system models using Model-Based Systems Engineering methods and tools (e.g., IBM® Rationale DOORS®, Cameo Systems Modeler by CATIA or Innoslate by Spec Innovations)
• Researches, models and documents system operations and limits against required performance, using design and basis documents and discussions with system designers
• Defines facility/system functions, behaviors, and other design requirements, prepares the criterion documents and coordinates, and facilitates technical discussion to resolve system design issues
• Leads system-level design verification, requirements verification, test requirement specifications, and requirements flow down and traceability
• Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports or proposals
