Critical Operations Engineer II RoleWe are hiring a Critical Operations Engineer II to maintain the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center’s electrical, mechanical, fire life safety systems, and communications infrastructure.
Shift: Day, 6:00 am–2:00 pm Tuesday–Saturday.
Mechanical responsibilities include chilled water systems, HVAC (roof top units, CRAC/CRAH units, humidification).
Electrical responsibilities cover critical power distribution from the utility/generator main switch gear through UPS systems to customer load.
Fire life safety responsibilities cover wet and pre‑action sprinkler systems and related detection devices.
Communications infrastructure responsibilities include IFD/MDF/MMR management, structured cabling, and customer space management.
Duties- Serve as data center subject matter expert for electrical, mechanical, controls, and fire life safety systems.
- Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facility systems (electrical, mechanical, communications, building monitoring, and control).
- Track and trend operational characteristics.
- Mentor junior staff.
- Work with the Data Center Manager to track and complete an aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance schedule.
- Provide guidance to the Manager on mechanical and electrical maintenance requirements.
- Ensure maximum operational efficiency by analyzing conditions, recommending new technologies, and improving efficiency.
- Manage systems to avoid unplanned, customer‑impacting outages.
- Manage data floor and mechanical loading capacity to optimize cooling system efficiency.
- Serve as primary knowledge expert on fire and electrical codes.
- Write procedures for preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
- Assist the Data Center Manager with maintaining a maintenance database and resolving site issues based on agreed priorities.
- Manage trouble tickets and work order completion processes.
- Lead infrastructure projects (internal/customer) which include cage build‑outs, overhead installations, rack and stack, CMMS navigation, and procedures usage.
- Assist with asset and consumable inventory management.
- Track and label all equipment per established procedures.
- Ensure timely completion of SLA‑compliant processes and upload data to the OSS.
- Provide physical security within the Core Site premises.
- Deliver exceptional day‑to‑day customer service and support.
- Escalate incidents and produce reports.
- Monitor the building fire alarm system.
- Conduct regular facility and security tours documenting and responding to issues.
- Promote Core Site’s principles of operational excellence, culture, and guiding principles.
- Expert understanding of electrical and mechanical systems in a facility/data center environment, including electrical distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS systems, STS, ATS, PDU’s, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH, and pre‑action sprinkler systems.
- Expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and building code compliance for fire life safety.
- Expert knowledge of fiber optics/cabling infrastructure and best practices.
- Expert knowledge of industrial safety best practices (LOTO, arc flash protection, OSHA, state regulations).
- Expert knowledge of data trending, tracking, and analysis, and ability to rapidly learn PC‑based integrated critical monitoring systems.
- 5–7 years of experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems (chilled water, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, VFDs, pumps, HVAC, CRAC/CRAH, humidification, BMS, PLCs, ETS, fuel systems).
- Leadership experience.
- Expert in installing, pulling, dressing, and terminating fiber and copper communications cabling.
- Experience diagnosing and repairing IT hardware, servers, network switches, and structured cabling.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
