Project OverviewThe rapid growth of AI and digitalization fuels demand for data centers requiring reliable energy sources. In response, the Renewables & Clean Power team signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas‑fired power generation facilities in the U.S. This project is large and complex, progressing toward full EPC delivery this year. The Area Field Engineer will support preconstruction planning from the Reston office, then relocate to Cheyenne, Wyoming for long‑term field assignment, contingent on project award.
Job SummaryIn this role, the Area Field Engineer manages a team and provides field engineering leadership for work planning and packaging, material management, quantity validation, safety and quality control, technical inspection and testing knowledge, and coordination of system turnover and subcontracting. The operator ensures field engineering activities run safely, are complete, and meet quality and project requirements.
The Area Field Engineer supervises all field engineering activities for all commodities within the assigned area and reports daily to the Area Manager (Aeros) and ultimately to the Project Field Engineer.
Major Responsibilities- Coordinate and direct multidisciplinary activities related to the operation of the assigned section.
- Oversee field engineering activities within the designated area.
- Engage with teams through CPM, competency development/assessment, and feedback.
- Direct requisitions for field‑procured materials, substitutions, services, and equipment.
- Handle quantity take‑off, control, reporting, and forecasting.
- Implement the zero accident philosophy, ensuring all craft and tools are safe.
- Coordinate construction and startup for system walkdowns; interface with startup specialists; assume turnover coordination as required.
- Review and approve inspection test plans; supervise subcontractor submittals.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or another relevant technical discipline from an accredited university and a minimum of 8–10 years of relevant experience, OR 12–14 years of relevant experience in absence of a degree.
- Knowledge of direct hire construction.
- Experience with North American Building Trades (Union) direct hire trades preferred.
- Experience installing packaged turbines (e.g., Aeroderivatives or Light Duty Industrial CTGs).
- Experience in more than one discipline (Civil, Piping, Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) is preferable.
- Proficiency in Bechtel Standard Work Process Procedures.
- Comprehensive knowledge of construction activities related to engineering disciplines, cost and scheduling, and contract administration.
- Knowledge of subcontract use and contractor/subcontractor responsibilities.
- Extensive background in managing staff, maintaining client relationships, and developing talent.
- Commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and a Zero Accident safety program.
- Familiarity with current industry quality standards.
- Effective communication skills essential for motivating team members and presenting plans clearly.
- Knowledge of cost management, estimating, and forecast development.
- Minimum five years field engineering experience in at least one discipline and at least two years supervisory experience.
