Overview

The Senior Commissioning Engineer serves as the Project Site Lead, providing overall leadership and technical oversight of the commissioning process for ON.energy's mission-critical, medium-voltage double-conversion UPS systems built on utility-scale BESS equipment (batteries, transformers, PCS, and controls). Leading site-based teams of 10–50 people from installation through commissioning, acceptance testing, and handover to services, the Senior Commissioning Engineer owns critical-path execution, stakeholder communication, and final commissioning sign-off for the site.

This is a senior, high-travel field leadership role for an engineer with deep BESS and power systems expertise who is equally comfortable leading a large multidisciplinary site team, interpreting a complex test plan, and serving as the customer-facing technical authority on site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and high-level troubleshooting for major issues.
  • Provide final commissioning sign-off and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in BESS, power systems, control architecture, and commissioning.
  • Strong background in commissioning, system integration, and grid compliance.
  • Proficiency in SCADA systems, communication protocols, and power conversion systems.
  • Leadership and project management experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, or other engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Willing and able to travel up to ~80% to project sites nationwide.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Safety certifications (OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, First Aid, CPR, AED).
  • Experience leading large site teams on hyperscale data center or utility-scale BESS projects.
  • Experience with medium-voltage switching and system energization.
  • Familiarity with major BESS OEM platforms and SCADA protocols (DNP3, Modbus, etc).

Soft Skills

  • Excellent stakeholder and customer communication.
  • Calm under pressure in schedule-driven environments.
  • Bias toward root-cause resolution, safety, and quality.
