The Design Group is the central resource within Dominion Engineering, Inc., an Allied Power company, that performs equipment, tooling, and product design. Engineers within the Design Group work within and collaborate to improve established design, drafting and release processes.

Design engineers are expected to design, develop, draft, and release assigned work ranging from individual components to complex assemblies. Project assignments are coordinated between the Design Manager, individual Project Coordinators, and the Director of Project Operations. Design engineers will work as individual contributors as well as team members based on project specific team structures.

This position requires strict adherence to nuclear industry principles, including but not limited to:

  • Commitment to personal, industrial, and nuclear safety
  • Verbatim compliance with written work instructions and procedures
  • Fitness for Duty – Drug and Alcohol-Free workplace
  • Use of Human Performance Tools

Applicants who cannot demonstrate end-to-end engineering design experience, including concept through release of tooling or equipment for industrial applications, and who are not prepared to present a design portfolio during the interview process, will not be considered.

Technical Director of Engineering Design, Products and Technology Division

Essential Functions

  • Translate customer and project requirements into design specifications for assigned project responsibilities.
  • Design, develop, and release components and subsystems under the supervision of Project Coordinators and the Engineering Design Director.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation. Including but not limited to 3D models and 2D drawings, calculations/design notes, and bills of materials.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure assigned work is completed from concept to launch.
  • Understand and evaluate capabilities, strengths, and compromises for common mechanical components (e.g., pumps); select components based on quantitative technical evaluations (e.g., pump curves).
  • Participate in collaborative brainstorming and design review sessions. Provide and accept feedback based on technical merit in a professional atmosphere.
  • Enthusiasm for peer group mentoring with other Designers/Engineers within the Design Group, encouraging consistency and high quality of work product.
Additional Functions

Subject to company and project needs, the Design Engineer may be called on to perform other functions suited to his/her expertise, including but not limited to:

  • Acting as an Individual Contributor on non-design tasks related to his/her design work (e.g., writing procedures, operating instructions, generating figures, etc.)
  • Inspection of received components, fit up, first time assembly for projects where design authority was assigned.
  • Reporting and disposition of deviations and corrective actions related to assigned designs.
  • Traveling to support field implementation of a project
  • Supporting internal business initiatives
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated proficiency with:
    • Engineering first principles:
      Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials
    • 3D Part and assembly modeling (Solidworks CSWP or equivalent experience)
    • 2D Drafting
    • Experience with prototype fabrication and standard manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills as well as organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Comprehensive familiarity with fabrication/manufacturing techniques
  • Knowledge of costs, lead times, and associated tradeoffs.
  • Ability to identify process gaps and propose/contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ability to articulate ideas and abstract concepts with clear written and verbal communication.
  • Comprehensive understanding of nuclear work environment and the unique design challenges/requirements thereof
