Your impact
We are currently seeking a T
ransportation Engineer / Planner to join our team at the Reston, VA office. As part of our expanding Advanced Mobility Systems group, you’ll collaborate with transportation planners, data analysts, traffic engineers, ITS designers, and operations specialists who bring diverse talents and extensive experience. Your role will involve supporting transportation planning and project development studies for VDOT, local governments, and regional agencies.
You will contribute to evaluating multimodal transportation improvements, corridor enhancements, safety initiatives, and transportation investment strategies across Virginia.
In this role, you will need a solid understanding of transportation planning, traffic analysis, multimodal mobility, and transportation operations. Your technical expertise will come into play as you work with tools such as VISSIM, Synchro, HCS, GIS, and related software to evaluate transportation alternatives and support project development decisions. You will be developing multi-modal solutions to enhance roadway facilities for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit users of all ages and abilities.
As a valued team member, you’ll also contribute to exciting and forward-thinking transportation technology projects involving data analytics, machine learning, and AI, all aimed at meeting the evolving needs of our clients.
- Lead and support multimodal traffic operations and safety studies.
- Develop traffic simulation models using Vissim, Synchro, and related software.
- Perform transportation planning analyses to evaluate corridor improvements, multimodal transportation needs, safety enhancements, operational improvements, and project development alternatives.
- Design and review MOT, signing, pavement marking, and temporary traffic control concepts.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations for DOT, county, and federal clients.

Here’s what you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field
- 4 or more years of progressive experience in ITS/ Traffic Engineering projects
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification
- Experience in traffic analysis tools including Vissim, HCS and Synchro.
- Experience with multimodal transportation, safety studies, MOT, signing and pavement markings.
- Highway Capacity Manual methodologies for roadway level of service (LOS) analysis.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Team oriented with strong capability to work independently.
- Experience supporting transportation planning, corridor, feasibility, or project development studies for public-sector clients preferred.
- PE, PTOE, PMP, or equivalent professional certification
- Previous experience delivering traffic engineering, traffic operations, or transportation planning services on VDOT projects preferred.

The base salary range for this position is $85,000.00 to $. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
