Job Summary:

The Pharmacy Intern is an individual currently enrolled in a pharmacy school and holds an Intern's License through the school. The intern performs selective pharmacy support functions under the supervision of the Pharmacy Director, Assistant Director, Licensed Pharmacist, and/or a Lead Pharmacy Technician. The intern will perform pharmacy work that does not require the professional licensure of a Pharmacist and may be assigned special projects designed to offer additional pharmacy experience.

Responsibilities
  • Utilizes appropriate resources to complete assignments within allocated time periods.
  • Adapts to changes in volume and acuity demands, remaining calm in crisis situations.
  • Adheres to Attendance and Tardiness Policy.
  • Supports responsible staffing decisions (cancels, places staff on hold/on-call, calls in hold/on-call staff appropriately).
  • Demonstrates efforts to eliminate waste.
  • Reports to work on time and is ready to start work.
  • Consistently utilizes Kronos system to document hours of work.
  • Demonstrates problem-solving ability using appropriate resources.
  • Serves as a resource as needed in an effective manner to units and other departments.
  • Is supportive of administrative decisions.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and cooperation, works well with others.
  • Is flexible in meeting staffing and scheduling requirements of the department.
  • Has working knowledge of the operation of the department or seeks guidance from appropriate personnel.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions to appropriate personnel and correctly completes work orders.
  • Assures a safe and clean environment, keeping hallways clutter-free and rooms neat.
  • Utilizes standard precautions by wearing protective equipment (goggles, gowns, gloves) and using correct hand-washing techniques.
  • Consistently strives to improve performance.
  • Makes suggestions for improvement.
  • Is receptive to new ideas.
  • Is cognizant of age-specific, cultural and physical needs of customers in providing service.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient and other information.
  • Gives accurate and concise reports.

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings or reads minutes.
  • Participates in unit/department orientation and preceptorships.

  • Attends all mandatory in-services annually.

  • Fills unit dose drug orders and prescriptions under supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Prepares unit dose drug orders to include packaging and labeling of medication under the pharmacist's direction.
  • Cleans various areas of the department as required.
  • Fills patient medication bins, floor stock exchange carts, automated dispensing machines (by Certified Pharmacy Tech Only) and anesthesia boxes, etc. under supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory control in the pharmacy.
  • Assists in the identification and return of outdated medications.
  • Delivers medications, exchange carts, and supplies to the various nursing units on a routine basis.
  • Answers telephone and work-area windows, assisting physicians, nursing personnel, and others by directing their questions or requests to the appropriate pharmacist.
  • Works in the IV admixture area - prepares IVs, TPN solutions, intensive-care nursery/peds and chemotherapy under direct supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Enter pharmacy charges via a computer.
  • Performs tasks as specifically outlined on duty sheet roster for the specific shift.
  • Orders drugs and supplies and restocks drug and supply orders.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Currently enrolled in a pharmacy school.
  • Certification:
    Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
