Overview
UX/UI and 508 Compliance Engineer. US-based position located in US.
ResponsibilitiesPeraton is seeking an experienced UX/UI and 508 Compliance Engineer to support a large-scale federal Identity and Access Management (IAM) modernization program. This program replaces two legacy IAM systems with a modern, cloud-based IAM.
The UX/UI and 508 Compliance Engineer will serve as the subject matter expert for user experience design, UI design, and Section 508 accessibility compliance across all public-facing and internal IAM platforms. This role ensures that all delivered interfaces are intuitive, accessible, compliant, and aligned with the Brand Style Guide and Design System.
What you will do:
User Experience Design and Research- Lead user experience design activities across Agile/Scrum development sprints, ensuring interface changes are grounded in user research and Human-Centered Design principles.
- Conduct discovery to understand the needs of diverse user populations, including external users, internal staff, and privileged account holders.
- Develop and maintain user research artifacts, wireframes, prototypes, and concept validation deliverables in support of UI changes.
- Validate new features and UX changes through concept validation activities; present findings and obtain Product Manager approval prior to implementation.
- Support usability testing and ensure usability artifacts are available at sprint closes.
- Design user interfaces and deliver visual comps and mockups for the IAM common login portal, SSO portal, and related IAM web applications.
- Support quarterly UI/UX updates to the SSO portal with design mockups and coordination with the Design Team.
- Develop and contribute new reusable components to the Design System.
- Ensure interfaces are mobile/tablet-optimized and bilingual (English/Spanish) where required.
- Participate in quarterly brand working group meetings and ensure deliverables adhere to the Brand Style Guide.
- Develop screen mockups for all public-facing systems.
- Lead Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance for all web applications, software, and ICT deliverables.
- Ensure deliverables conform to Revised Section 508 Standards and WCAG AA criteria.
- Conduct automated accessibility testing each sprint using tools such as axe, WAVE, Lighthouse, or equivalent, aiming for zero errors in automated and manual testing.
- Perform hands-on manual accessibility testing with assistive technologies (JAWS, NVDA, Voice Over, Talk Back) across major browsers and OS.
- Review wireframes and designs for accessibility; provide early feedback on color contrast, focus order, component patterns, labeling, and information architecture.
- Author accessibility defect reports with WCAG references and remediation steps; collaborate with developers to verify fixes.
- Apply ARIA roles, states, and properties to identify and resolve accessibility defects in dynamic content.
- Support the preparation of Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs) and VPATs for software delivered under the program.
- Remediate defects promptly to avoid contract disincentives; ensure compliance with WCAG AA and 508 requirements.
- Support co-branding and Section 508 compliance for IAM applications and relying parties.
- Adhere to the Style Guide and 508 standards for all IAM web content updates.
- Operate as an embedded member of the Agile development team, contributing to design, development, testing, QA, and delivery each sprint.
- Collaborate with developers, product managers, scrum masters, and federal stakeholders to integrate UX and accessibility into sprint planning.
- Maintain Jira ticket documentation with user research artifacts for all UI changes, in compliance with program SLA requirements.
- Communicate design decisions, accessibility findings, and compliance status clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 8 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree or 12 years with a high school diploma/equivalent.
