Overview
The Aircraft Mechanic troubleshoots malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti‑icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems to ensure aircraft remains in safe operating condition. Maintains repairs and modifies aircraft structures and structural components of moderate difficulty. Receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher‑level technician, and occasionally leads teams through more complex aircraft‑relevant tasks.
This position is located in Patuxent River, MD on the Naval Test Wing Atlantic (NTWL) Program.
- Maintains and repairs aircraft components, including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components.
- Repairs or replaces worn or damaged components such as carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, engine‑mounted gearboxes, and compressor bleed valves using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment; removes engines from aircraft using hoist or forklift truck, disassembles and inspects parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects, repairs or replaces defective engine parts, and reassembles and installs the engine in the aircraft.
- Adjusts, repairs, or replaces electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories; performs preflight, through‑flight, and post‑flight maintenance inspections; carries out miscellaneous duties such as flushing crankcase, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes.
- Applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems to determine equipment malfunctions.
- Applies required expertise to restore equipment condition and operation.
- Uses comprehensive technical expertise to solve moderate to complex problems by interpreting technical documentation such as blueprints or manufacturers’ manuals.
- Supervises jack and tow operations, verifies satisfactory completion of work, and may service engines and airframe components at line station, performing repairs short of overhaul to keep aircraft in safe operating condition. May specialize in work, repair, and modification of structural, precision, and functional spare parts and assemblies or in engine repair.
- May be required to enter details in aircraft logs and records and prioritize workload to meet project schedules.
- Complies with all current sections of COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series applicable to aircraft maintenance and ALSS.
Other or Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform other job‑related duties as may be assigned.
- Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures, and replacement of parts.
- Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair.
- Basic knowledge of electrical theory.
- Thorough knowledge of aircraft‑unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes, and sheers.
- Working knowledge of technical publications.
- Ability to prioritize workload to maintain project schedules.
- Working knowledge of corrosion‑control techniques and base, federal, and company procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.
- Working knowledge of aircraft subsystems, including maintenance parameters, system operation, limitations, and technical orders.
- Possession of a valid US state driver’s license.
- Ability to read and interpret data.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Ability to obtain a government flight line driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain a secret security clearance.
Experience &
Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of specialized courses in aircraft structural repair is required.
- Two to four years of actual and recent experience in the repair, modification, maintenance, and overhaul of the E‑2C/D aircraft. Four years preferred.
- May work in aircraft maintenance hangar or outdoors.
- May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure.
