Software Engineer
AvMet Applications, Inc. (AvMet) is recruiting for a Software Engineer who is self-motivated and detail-oriented with excellent communication skills and a positive attitude to join our team of scientists, engineers, and researchers. AvMet staff have a wide range of backgrounds and experience from air traffic management and airline operations to operational meteorology and systems engineering. AvMet’s work ranges from program management support to large-scale data manipulation, modeling, and analysis.
The successful candidate will be part of a team supporting Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) projects. The candidate will primarily develop and implement effective software for cloud and web-based applications. In addition, the candidate will develop or contribute to solutions to a variety of software problems of varying scopes and complexity.
This position requires strong problem-solving skills focused on software development. Candidates should be able to take an idea for desired user functionality and efficiently design, code, test, and maintain software to meet user needs. This position also requires the ability to work independently and in team-based environments with some guidance.
The candidate must be able to manage multiple tasks and convey a professional image in client meetings.
Responsibilities:- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and participate in code reviews and architecture discussions
- Help transition R&D prototypes into reliable, scalable customer-facing products
- Develop RESTful APIs and deploy solutions on AWS and other cloud environments using Mongo
DB and other data stores - Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code aligned with engineering best practices
- Improve system reliability through monitoring, performance assessments, and fault-tolerant design
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across the stack
- B.S. in Computer Science or related field and 3–10 years of professional software engineering experience
- Experience with AWS, REST APIs, and modern web development
- Proficiency with Git, No
SQL/relational databases, and JSON/XML data formats - Understanding of scalable software architecture and frameworks
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and effectively communicate with management, customers, and technical team members.
- Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
Qualifications:
- Interest in contributing to and improving aviation operations
- Experience with web GIS/mapping frameworks (e.g., Leaflet and WebGL)
- Experience with Linux/Windows, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines
- Experience in Java application development
- Ability to research, learn, and teach new skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Knowledge of aviation operations (e.g., flight operations, air traffic control, etc.) and associated data sets
- Knowledge of FAA/NWS aviation weather programs and data sets
This position is located in the Reston, VA area. The start date for the position is flexible. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing the required federal background investigation.
