What You’ll Do
The Public Health Laboratory is seeking a Public Health Genetics Consultant with thorough knowledge of genetic/metabolic disorders to act as a public health resource for individuals with or at risk for genetic disorders. This position will provide expert technical assistance and orientation concerning newborn screening to health professionals (e.g., local public health personnel, officials, physicians).
- Explains the clinical implications of newborn screening results to hospital personnel and health‑care providers.
- Reviews and responds to inquiries from parents, health‑care professionals, and officials.
- Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates program activities to ensure compliance with state rules and regulations.
- Maintains current knowledge of literature and public‑policy issues in newborn screening.
- Assists the Public Health Laboratory bureau chief and supervisor in developing educational and promotional activities for the Newborn Screening Program.
- Presents training sessions to medical professionals, hospitals, and community stakeholders on topics pertaining to newborn screening.
- Participates in advisory committees for the Newborn Screening Program.
- Prepares required records and reports on case investigations, site visits, patient referral activities, and assessment of provider adherence to program policies and procedures.
Selected candidates must be vaccinated for Hepatitis‑B and will be exposed to biofluids and tissue, sharps, caustic or toxic chemicals, and/or explosives. Work may involve varying hours, and candidates must be able to provide their own transportation.
Qualifications- 42 months of experience in a health‑care setting (e.g., Pediatric Registered Dietitian, Registered Nurse) including program evaluation, training development, and coalition collaboration; or
- 42 months’ experience in genetics consultation in health, public health, or a related field with similar competencies; or
- Completion of graduate core coursework in Genetic Counseling with 6 months of direct service or consultation experience in a public health, community health, hospital, or clinic setting, plus the same coalition collaboration experience.
- Graduate or advanced degree in Genetic Counseling, Biochemistry, or Medical Science.
- Clinical experience in genetics, endocrinology, biochemistry, or neonatology settings.
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant‑Certified, or Registered Dietitian.
- Experience providing medical technical assistance or educational consultation.
- Experience designing and performing data analysis and producing reports.
- Experience developing educational materials and presenting trainings.
- Experience performing medical case management.
- Experience monitoring quality‑assurance indicators and documenting organizational compliance with regulatory standards.
- Experience with computer software (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Electronic Medical Records).

Official educational transcripts are required for all post‑high‑school educational accomplishments, coursework, or degrees claimed on the application.
