Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is recruiting to fill a Civil Engineer Transportation Advanced position within the North Central Region. This full-time permanent position will be headquartered in Wisconsin Rapids or Rhinelander. This position offers a hybrid work schedule and is headquartered at and required to work from one of the DTSD North Central office buildings at least 2 days per week.
Telemworking from within the State of Wisconsin is generally expected. Details discussed at interview.

The Regional Traffic Engineer (Civil Engineer Transportation Advanced) will perform the most complex traffic engineering functions for the North Central Region. The role provides engineering direction and guidance to engineering technicians, engineering specialists, and other civil engineers. It involves high-level engineering analysis for high-profile projects, frequent contact with project personnel, contractors, local officials, and the public, and expert understanding of traffic management and safety strategies.
The position also functions as a work zone traffic control expert for the North Central Region, with duties focused on guidance and acceptance in all stages of Transportation Management Plan (TMP) development and associated work zone traffic control management. The role coordinates and approves Lane Closure System (LCS) entries and provides leadership and direction in all stages of lane closures for projects and work activities in the region.

Salary and BenefitsThis position is in schedule-range (14-13) with an annual salary of $92,768-$112,237, plus excellent benefits. An additional $2,080 per year for a Professional Engineer License is included. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees is set per the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan. A $3,000 sign-on bonus applies to applicants who do not have any prior permanent full-time state service in the last five years and agree to remain for one year.
The $3,000 is paid on the first paycheck.
Travel requirements:
This position requires the ability to independently travel throughout the North Central Region and occasional statewide travel.
Fieldwork requirement:
Fieldwork is required. This may involve all seasons, adverse weather, high-volume traffic conditions, bending, and lifting approximately 20 lbs. and carrying over 50 feet.
Standby requirement:
The position serves in standby status as part of the Region’s Statewide Incident Notification Team as needed.
Compliance:
The agency does not sponsor work visas, is not enrolled in USCIS E-Verify, and cannot employ international F-1 students seeking STEM-OPT extension. Appointment may require a criminal background check, including FBI fingerprinting.

- A valid Professional Engineering registration and the ability to obtain Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE is from another state.
