The Utility Maintenance Foreman is a working supervisor position that will perform duties to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the water distribution, wastewater collection and stormwater utility systems. This position will be initiated under recommendation of the Director of Public Works with a six-month probationary period. The Utility Maintenance Foreman job description includes but is not limited to the following areas of expertise and responsibility.
This is a salaried position that is FLSA exempt and shall not be eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time off.
- Coordinate ongoing department operation activities with the Director of Public Works routinely to provide information necessary for purchase of necessary equipment and supplies, for regulatory reporting, and for ongoing budgetary considerations.
- Coordinating with contractors, developers and other agencies for issues dealing with utility systems or utility right-of-way issues.
- Accustomed to normally encountered situations in the operations, construction and maintenance of utility systems.
- Accustomed to proper procedures for laying water, sanitary and storm sewer main and preparing and making joints of various types, drilling and tapping mains and installing any of the appurtenant parts of the water distribution system and sewer collection system.
- Accustomed to procedures for installing, testing and repairing water meters.
- Proficient in the use of electrical and other equipment used for thawing frozen portions of the water and sanitary sewer systems.
- Maintain driver’s license required for daily travel throughout the city.
- Maintain appropriate levels of DNR certification for water (Grade 1, Class G,D).
- Assist with hiring of full-time and temporary utility department employees as directed by the Director of Public Works.
- Coordinate and network with other City Departments and Committees to ensure productive cooperation and communication to enhance City operations. This may require attendance at after-hour City meetings.
- Supervise daily activities of Utility Department employees to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the water distribution system, wastewater and stormwater collection systems.
- Supervise and coordinate necessary utility department employee response required for after-hour emergencies.
- Coordinate maintenance items with employee vacation or time off requests.
- Deal with customers’ complaints and/or concerns in a timely reasonable manner.
- Must have or be willing to obtain certain DNR Grade certifications within 1 year of start date.
- Management of employees and budgeting experience.
- Must be willing to work outside in unpleasant conditions.
- Must be able to lift 70 pounds.
- Must have good communication and documentation skills.
