The Physics Department of the University of Rhode Island (URI) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position of an Assistant Professor of Physics beginning in Fall 2026, specifically for a theorist or computational physicist working in the field of Quantum Information Science (QIS).
Key Responsibilities:
Consideration will be given to applicants who can show expertise and creative ideas for their role as researcher, mentor, and teacher in the QIS program at the URI Physics Department. Preference will be given to candidates actively working on decoherence aspects of superconducting qubits. The successful candidate will strengthen and broaden the existing QIS program in the Physics Department, teach undergraduate and graduate physics courses, advise undergraduate and graduate students in the research component of BS, MS, and PhD degrees, secure external research funding, and be active in service at the levels of Department, College, and University.
The position includes support from an NSF Expand
QISE grant in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Quantum Institute (PQI). URI guarantees the continuation of standard institutional support after this initial period.
Required qualifications:
1. PhD in physics or very closely related discipline.
2. Postdoctoral experience.
3. Record of scholarly achievement (publications, presentations, awards).
4. Well-conceived research plan with potential to attract external funding.
5. Proficiency in written communication skills.
6. Proficiency in oral English communication skills.
7. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
Preferred qualifications:
1. Demonstrated potential to be an effective teacher of university physics courses at any level.
