Job DescriptionAbout The Greene School
The Greene School (TGS) is a public charter high school located in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, serving approximately 200 students in grades 9–12. Our students come from the entire state of RI – including urban, rural and suburban areas. We are rooted in EL Education (Expeditionary Learning model) and grounded in a commitment to environmental education, student agency, and authentic learning experiences for students from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
TGS has recently received state approval to expand to a 6–12 configuration, adding a middle school program that will deepen our continuum of learning and strengthen our community. This is an exciting moment in our school's history – and an equally exciting time to step into school leadership.
The Greene School is seeking a visionary and grounded School Principal to provide instructional and operational leadership for our school community. Reporting to the Head of School, the Principal will serve as the day‑to‑day instructional leader: building teacher capacity, nurturing a strong school culture, and ensuring that every student experiences rigorous, engaging, and meaningful learning. This role is ideal for an educator who is deeply committed to progressive, expeditionary education;
who understands the unique promise of charter schools to serve as laboratories of innovation; and who brings both warmth and high expectations to their leadership practice.
Instructional Leadership
- Champion the EL Education model and support teachers in delivering high‑quality Expeditionary Learning experiences
- Lead instructional coaching cycles in partnership with the school's instructional coach
- Use data, including student assessment results and feedback, to guide school improvement decisions
- Facilitate professional development that is practical, collaborative, differentiated and grounded in TGS's model
- Partner with members of the leadership team in a collaborative manner to meet the diverse needs of all students and all members of the teachers and support staff
School Culture & Community
- Build and sustain a positive, inclusive, and student‑centered school culture
- Maintain strong relationships with students, families, and community partners
- Lead Restorative Practices and support staff in addressing student needs holistically
- Serve as a visible, accessible, and caring presence in the day‑to‑day life of the school
Operations & Management
- Oversee daily school operations including scheduling, staffing, safety and compliance
- Supervise and evaluate instructional staff in alignment with Rhode Island educator evaluation frameworks
- Collaborate with the Head of School on strategic planning, including the school's 6–12 expansion
- Ensure fidelity to the school's charter and applicable state and federal regulations
The ideal candidate leads with both head and heart. They are a skilled instructional leader who can develop teachers and build coherent systems – and they are equally capable of showing up for a student in crisis, facilitating a community meeting, or developing/leading engaging professional development. They believe that adults thrive in the same conditions as students: clear expectations, genuine and reciprocal feedback, collaborative structures, and meaningful work.
We are especially interested in candidates who see the 6–12 expansion not as a challenge to manage, but as an opportunity to build something lasting.
The Greene School offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience. Benefits include health, dental, vision and life insurance; retirement contributions; and meaningful professional development aligned with the school's model.
How to ApplyInterested candidates should submit the following materials to the Head of School at The Greene School:
