The Criminology and Criminal Justice Department at the University of Rhode Island seeks to hire an Assistant Professor starting in fall of the 2026 academic year. The area of expertise is open.
Criminology and Criminal Justice is an undergraduate, interdisciplinary program with over 500 majors. Our faculty are productive scholars who are committed to providing high quality education. We are supportive of junior faculty and work to promote a healthy work-life balance for all of our members. URI is located on a beautiful historic campus in close proximity to the coast, with easy access to Providence, Boston, TF Green Airport, and Amtrak lines.
We seek a scholar-teacher who is committed to the University of Rhode Island's mission as a learner-centered R1 university.
Key
Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate would be expected to teach social science courses in criminology and criminal justice, conduct scholarly research and publish in scholarly journals; seek external funding for research; engage in student mentoring, and serve on committees within/perform service to the department, college, and university.
Qualifications
Required:
1. Ph.D in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a closely related social science field with a specialty grounded in criminology or criminal justice, or ABD with degree conferred by time of appointment.
2. Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in teaching criminology and/or criminal justice topics from a social science perspective.
3. Evidence of, or potential for, research excellence in criminology and/or criminal justice, as shown by publications, research grants, and/or works in progress.
4. Demonstrated ability to work with people with varied backgrounds and perspectives.
5.
Demonstrated proficiency in oral communication.
6.
Demonstrated proficiency in written communication.
7. Currently eligible to work in the US.
Preferred:
1. Demonstrated experience teaching criminology and/or criminal justice topics from a social science perspective at the college level as the instructor of record.
2. Demonstrated record of scholarly productivity in criminology and/or criminal justice.
3. Evident potential to develop an independently-funded research program.
