Job Description

Teaches middle school subjects in public schools to students with neurological, mental, emotional, and/or behavior impairments. Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional material to meet individual needs of student, considering state and school requirements, physical, emotional, and educational levels of development. Confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and others to develop individual educational plans for students. Instructs students in all academic subjects.

Creates learning materials geared to each student's ability and interest. Instructs students, using special educational strategies and techniques, to improve sensory motor and perceptional motor development, perception, memory, language, cognition, and social and emotional development. Works with students to increase motivation, provide consistent reinforcement to learning, continuous assessment of level of functioning, and continuous feedback to student for all learning activities.

Works with parents to accept and develop skills in dealing with students learning abilities. May teach in self contained classroom, or teach in a resource room. Position Type:

Job Requirements
  • *** Must have RI Teacher Certification for:
    All Grades Special Education - Severe Intellectual Disability Teacher. Provides a basic core program for identified students consistent with state education requirements and the students' IEP. Develops and implements IEP goals and objectives based on evaluation results. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects in order to communicate these objectives to the students.

    Employs instructional methods and materials that are deemed appropriate for accomplishing stated objectives. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student conduct, and, for the classroom, develop responsible rules of classroom behavior and procedures, and maintain order in the classroom environment in a fair and just manner.

    Plans and supervises purposeful assignments of teacher aide (s). Provides social skills training for students in conjunction with goals and objectives in the IEP to assist students in forming positive relationships with peers and adults. Mainstreams students in subject areas where possible. Provides instruction in all areas of the students' academic strengths and weaknesses. Administers and scores educational evaluations or reevaluations.

    Completes appropriate special education records. Consults with administrators, teachers and parents regarding student progress and/or problems. Participates in Multi disciplinary Team meetings and IEP meetings when scheduled. Provides appropriate materials to enable the student to realize goals and objectives stated in the IEP. May coordinate and supervise other special services being provided to students. Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the educational, social, and adjustment problems of the students.

    Assists other professional staff in resolving the unique educational, psychological and/or discipline needs of students. Assists the student and/or parents in making a realistic assessment of the student's abilities and in establishing educational and occupational goals in keeping with those abilities. Provides motivation to students who have difficulty attending in the classroom and/or who have difficulty engaging themselves in educationally related activities.

    Be involved in on going professional study related to the education and psychology of the disabled student. Maintains accurate records for state reports. May communicate with outside agencies which are providing services to the student and/or to research available student services. Participates in and conduct staff development activities. Develops, monitors, and evaluates curriculum in an on going manner. Makes recommendations for supplies, equipment, and materials.

    Assumes responsibility for yard duty and hall monitoring as necessary. Performs other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director and/or Building Principal.
