Special Education Teacher (Anticipated)

Block Island School (K-12) is seeking a full-time special educator. Assignment to be determined based on need and valid RI Certification(s). Candidates must hold or be eligible for RI certification secondary special education;
PreK - 12 and/or elementary and secondary preferred.

The special educator is responsible for providing specialized designed instruction to students with disabilities and interventions to non-identified students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and adheres to all District, Federal and State policies, procedures and regulations for IDEA and Section 504.
  • Completes all relevant paperwork within compliance due dates.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in all required referral, eligibility and IEP/504 team meetings as assigned.
  • Administer assessments to identify strengths and skill deficiencies in students.
  • Deliver current research-based instructional practices and strategies to help students access the curriculum.
  • Design and deliver accommodations and specially designed instruction to students by modifying and adapting curricula, instructional methods, and providing behavioral supports in consultation/collaboration with specialists.
  • Assist general education staff with the implementation of accommodations, best practices and individualized instruction for identified students.
  • Develop IEPs using data to inform present levels, baseline, measurable goals and progress monitoring methods.
  • Facilitate IEP meetings as appropriate and complete associated paperwork.
  • Complete written progress reports using data as outlined in the IEP and aligned with IEP goals.
  • Effectively communicate with and establish positive relationships with parents, community and with other staff members, as appropriate.
  • Complete and maintain accurate and up to date special education and Medicaid records as required.
  • Plan with classroom teachers and work with identified students in an inclusion setting to the maximum extent appropriate.
  • Collect, record and analyze data to document progress and to inform educational decisions.
  • Communicate high and clear expectations.
  • Consult with and provide frequent feedback to the general education teacher and other staff.
  • Maintain accurate student special education records for parents, school and state reports.
  • Participate in professional development as determined by the Director of Student Services and/or Principal.
  • Demonstrate ability in using technology to support teaching & learning.
  • Demonstrate ability with planning, coordinating & validating instructional innovation efforts.
  • Establish effective relationships with colleagues, parents, students, & administrators.
  • Demonstrate exemplary oral & written communication & listening skills.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Interventionist - Knowledge of intervention strategies in core subject areas, especially math.
  • Participate in MTSS problem solving and department/grade level team meetings.
  • Use data to target students' need areas, set intervention goals, monitor progress and to determine adequate progress.
  • Use data to revise interventions and make decisions about instruction and/or setting new goals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively, collaboratively and effectively with students, teachers and administrators.
  • Communicate effectively and frequently with parents.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and proficiency in digital programs and interventions.
  • Ability to work independently to meet responsibilities and also work well with others as part of a team.
  • Serve as a member of the MTSS team.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Block Island is a small island located approximately 12 miles off the southern coast of Rhode Island. Our school district is comprised of one school. The Block Island School houses grades K-12 and has a student population of approximately 123 students. Block Island is accessible by boat or plane. Full-time employees must live on the island during the school year/week because of the limited ferry schedule.

Job Requirements
  • Block Island is 12 miles off the southern coast of Rhode Island and can be accessed by ferry or plane. Successful candidate must live on Block Island during the school year because the ferry schedule does not coordinate with the school day. In addition, travel between the island and mainland is subject to cancellation due to weather.
  • Bachelor degree preferred.
