Job SummaryPrimary responsibility is to assist special education students with academic work and the implementation of their Individualized Education Program (IEP) and personal care routines.
Responsibilities- Perform under the Special Education teacher's supervision in all areas of school activities and instruction.
- Maintain classroom structure and behavioral control.
- Assist with academic instruction as identified in and prescribed by the student's IEP.
- Assist in inclusion activities supporting students in the general education setting.
- Assist with non‑academic instruction provided by itinerant teachers.
- Correct students' assignments, edit or clarify (simplify), enlarge general education worksheets as modified by the Special Education teacher.
- Assist in carrying out programs designed by physical, occupational or speech therapists. (Do not perform therapy without prior training or a signed directive.)
- Assist physically challenged children in the use of wheelchairs or other adaptive equipment when appropriately trained.
- Supervise students before school, during recess, lunch, dismissal and field trips.
- Administer school rules and regulations governing student behavior.
- Perform any other related duties assigned by the building principal or Director of Special Education.
- Assist in toileting and other self‑care/independent living skills (hygiene).
- Current BCI with fingerprinting.
- Bachelor’s degree, Paraprofessional certification or Associate’s degree (or higher) with completed coursework in Reading, Writing, Math.
- Teacher Assistant certification preferred.
- Safety Care Training preferred.
- At least one year of relevant experience preferred.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
- Must maintain First Aid and Safety Care Certification.
- Must meet RI Department of Education training & certificate requirements.
- Annual evaluation every two years by the school principal or more frequently per Article 21.
- Communication skills: strong oral and written communication; ability to respond to varied needs with sensitivity.
- Interpersonal and problem‑solving skills: professional interaction with students and staff; personable problem‑solving approach.
- Team‑based skills: work collegially with all levels of administration and staff.
- Planning skills: prioritize needs and requests of students and teachers within school setting.
- Technical skills: proficiency in essential computer applications.
May occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.
StatusFull‑time (32.5 hours). M‑F 8:15‑3:15.
