Scituate School Department, located in the scenic town of Scituate, Rhode Island, serves approximately 1,200 students across five schools. Position SummaryPrimary responsibility is to assist special education students with academic work and the implementation of their Individualized Education Programs (IEP) and personal care routines.
Responsibilities- Assist the Special Education teacher in academic instruction as identified in and prescribed by the student's IEP.
- Support inclusion activities for students in general education settings.
- Provide non‑academic instruction when directed by itinerant teachers.
- Edit or clarify student assignments and enlarge worksheets as modified by the Special Education teacher.
- Carry out programs designed by physical, occupational, or speech therapists under written directive.
- Assist physically challenged children with wheelchairs or adaptive equipment when appropriately trained.
- Supervise students before school, during recess, lunch, and dismissal, as well as during field trips.
- Enforce school rules and regulations governing student behavior.
- Assist with hygiene and toileting activities, self‑care, and independent living skills.
- Complete any other related duties assigned by the building principal or the Director of Special Education.
- Current BCI with fingerprinting.
- Bachelor's degree, Associate's degree, paraprofessional certification, or completed coursework demonstrating reading, writing, and math skills.
- Teacher assistant certification preferred.
- Safety Care Training preferred.
- At least one year of relevant experience. Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
- Must maintain First Aid and Safety Care certification and meet RI Department of Education training and certification requirements.
- Physical demand: ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs with assistance.
- Strong oral, written, interpersonal, problem‑solving, team‑based, planning, and technical skills.
- Scheduled for a full‑time school year; eligibility for evaluation every two years.
