Special Education Director

The Greene School The Greene School - West Greenwich, Rhode Island

Job Description

About The Greene School The Greene School (TGS) is a public charter high school located in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, serving approximately 200 students in grades 9–12. Our students come from the entire state of RI - including urban, rural and suburban areas. We are rooted in EL Education (Expeditionary Learning model) and grounded in a commitment to environmental education, student agency, and authentic learning experiences for students from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

TGS has recently received state approval to expand to a 6–12 configuration, adding a middle school program that will deepen our continuum of learning and strengthen our community. This is an exciting moment in our school's history and an equally exciting time to join our community. Position Summary TGS is seeking a part-time Director of Special Education to lead our special education program one day per week.

This is a leadership position responsible for special education regulatory compliance as determined by the Rhode Island Department of Education, along with the design and oversight of individualized education programs for our students. The role also carries instructional and collaborative leadership responsibilities tied to fostering a positive school culture and effectively managing student crises. This part-time schedule is well suited to an experienced special education leader seeking a focused, high-impact role within a small, mission-driven school community.

Responsibilities Special Education Service Delivery Design, implement, supervise, and evaluate the special education service delivery system. Maintain an accurate listing of students with an IEP, including eligibility status, required services and supports, ORS, and Medicaid status. Intake new students and their families and obtain special education records from former school districts. Staffing and Program Oversight Support the recruitment, training, and supervision of special education and related service staff.

Serve as the district representative to other agencies, such as ORS (Office of Rehabilitation Services) and BHDDH, and the West Bay Collaborative. Compliance and Data Management Ensure appropriate and timely submission of data to RIDE. Work collaboratively with the school data census clerk to ensure accurate data submission to RIDE. Collaborate with the business office to ensure maximum revenue for Medicaid-eligible students.

Student Support and Transition Planning Work collaboratively with the school guidance counselor to ensure appropriate accommodations for state testing (Science, SAT, PSAT, etc.). Work collaboratively with the guidance counselor on student course selection for high school and post-secondary education. Ensure all students engage in age-appropriate transition assessments, including MAPs, ORS Assessment/Job Exploration Experiences, and Xello. Conduct the annual Post School Outcome Survey with former graduates.

Family Engagement and Leadership Collaboration Plan, organize, and facilitate quarterly Special Education Parent Advisory Committee meetings. Work collaboratively with the school principal and other school leaders in assessing, consulting, and intervening with students and families in crisis situations. Collaborate with other district leaders in evaluating professional development needs, and organize and present to school staff as appropriate. Collaborate with the Head of School in submitting the annual Consolidated Resource Application.

Schedule This is a part-time position requiring one day per week on campus, with the specific day to be determined in coordination with the Head of School based on compliance deadlines and school needs. Some additional availability by phone or email may be needed for time-sensitive compliance matters. Compensation Salary is prorated based on a one-day-per-week schedule and commensurate with experience and certification.
