Job Description

Job Summary: We are looking for an exceptional part time Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) to join our team at the Block Island School. The position serves our students 2 to 3 days a week depending on caseloads.

The position assesses, treats and provides services to students with speech, language, voice and fluency in a classroom or other setting using treatment plans, 504 plans and IEPs. It tests students for special education qualifications and writes, reviews and updates treatment plans, 504 plans and IEPs. It implements treatment plans and works with other staff members to adapt classroom instruction, lessons and materials for individual students.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare evaluation reports and select and assign levels of needed services. Coordinate services with other district special education programs, district staff, and community resources.
  • Plan, develop, write and review treatment plans. Recommend modifications to the class/school/academic programs for students who require accommodations.
  • Use oral, written and electronic communications to students and parents/guardians regarding student progress towards treatment, classroom and district education objectives/goals. Schedule parent conferences as needed or requested.
  • Assist school staff members, students and parents/guardians in understanding the student’s communication disorder and the role of the Speech and Language Pathologist.
  • Observe, evaluate and refer students who need additional services and support.
  • Screen referred students using appropriate procedures, techniques and various formal and informal assessments and evaluate students for service eligibility.
  • Provide direct and consultative services to teachers in classroom settings as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with parents/guardians, teachers, learning specialists, school psychologists, instructional assistants, occupational therapists, nurses and physical therapists in support of each student’s total educational program.
  • Collaborate with district administrators, teachers and other school staff to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, regulations and district policies regarding IDEA, Section 504 and Medicaid. Complete Medicaid billing forms.
  • Present issues and concerns to Director of Student Services for review and resolution.
  • Keep abreast of best practices, maintain professional relationships and participate in activities that enhance service delivery for students and families.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures.
  • Maintain consistent, daily and punctual attendance.
Qualifications
  • Licensed Speech Language Pathologist with state credentials.
  • Experience working with students in a classroom or other educational setting.
  • Knowledge of IDEA and Section 504 requirements.
  • Ability to develop and implement treatment plans, 504 plans and IEPs.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Must live on Block Island during the school year due to restricted ferry schedule.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
Location

Block Island School houses grades K-12 and has a student population of approximately 123 students. Block Island is accessed by boat or plane. Full‑time employees must live on the island during the school year because the ferry schedule does not coordinate with the school day.
