Position Summary

Physical Therapists (PTs) provides a variety of medical services to help individualswhohavebeeninjuredorphysicallyaffectedbyillnesstorecover orimprovefunction.

Aphysicaltherapistmustbeabletoevaluateapatient's conditionanddeviseacustomizedphysicalrehabilitationandtreatmentplan. The PTs' goal is to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functionalability,inordertomaximizequalityoflife.

Position Responsibilities

Physical Therapistsprovidecaretopatientsbasedontheapplicationof scientific physical therapy principles. Responsibilities of the Physical Therapist include (but are not limited to):

  • Plansandadministersmedicallyprescribedphysicaltherapytreatment for patients suffering from injuries, or muscle, nerve, joint and bone diseases,torestorefunction,relieve pain,andpreventdisability
  • Reviews physician'sreferral(prescription) and patient'sconditionand medicalrecordstodeterminephysicaltherapytreatmentrequired
  • Tests and measures patient's strength, motor development, sensory perception, functional capacity, and respiratory and circulatory efficiency,andrecordsfindingstodeveloporrevisetreatmentprograms
  • Plansandprepareswrittentreatmentprogrambasedonevaluationof patient data
  • Administersmanualexercisestoimproveandmaintainfunction
  • Instructs, motivates, and assists patient to perform various physical activities, such as non-manual exercises, ambulatory functional activities,daily-living activities,andinuseofassistantandsupportive devices,suchascrutches,canes,and prostheses
  • Administerstreatmentsinvolvingapplicationofphysicalagents,using equipment, such as hydrotherapy tanks and whirlpool baths, moist packs,ultravioletandinfraredlamps,andultrasoundmachines
  • Evaluateseffectsoftreatmentatvariousstagesandadjuststreatments to achieve maximum
  • Administers massage
  • Administerstractiontorelievepain
  • Records treatment,response,andprogressinpatient'schartorenters information into computer
  • Instructspatientandfamilyintreatmentprocedurestobecontinuedat home
  • Confers with physician and other practitioners to obtain additional patient information, suggest revisions in treatment program, and integratephysicaltherapytreatmentwithotheraspectsofpatient's healthcare
  • Orients,instructs,anddirectsworkactivitiesofassistantsandaides
  • Performsotherposition-relateddutiesasassigned,depending on assignment setting

  • CurrentPTlicense,ingoodstandingwiththeStatelicensingboard
  • Minimumofone(1) yearPTexperience,incorrespondingsetting
  • Federal-,State-andGHR-requiredcredentialscurrentandonfile
  • Cognitiveskillsasrelatedtotheposition
Working Conditions

Eveningandweekendworkmayberequiredinordertofitpatientschedules. Thejobisphysicallydemanding.

Physical Therapistsarerequiredtostandfor long periods of time. They spend considerable time stooping, kneeling and crouching.

PTsmoveheavyequipment.

Theyassistwithpatienttransfersand liftsorhelpthemturn,standorwalk.

So,toguardagainstbackinjury,they must follow proper body mechanics and procedures for lifting/moving patients. Physical Therapists that work in sub-acute or long-term care settings,havepatientsthatneedmoreassistance;therefore,thejobismore physically demanding,comparedtoPTsthatworkinout-patient settings.
