Postdoctoral Researcher Position:
Multi-omics examination of phytoplankton blooms

The Rynearson lab at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography invites applications to fill a Postdoctoral Researcher position focused on investigating phytoplankton bloom dynamics as part of a funded NSF grant that includes investigators from the University of Washington and Georgia Institute of Technology.

Responsibilities and Duties

The aim of the project is to understand the metabolic and functional activities that occur over the life cycle of a phytoplankton bloom. The postdoc’s responsibilities include analysis of metatranscriptome datasets from two years of existing field samples. The postdoc will also have the opportunity to integrate metatranscriptome data with existing proteome and metabolome data. Frequent field sample collections allow for the application of time series statistics to this multi-omics dataset and the opportunity to explicitly examine different stages of a bloom life cycle.

Postdoc responsibilities also include dissemination of results in peer‑reviewed publications and presentations. The postdoc will be required to contribute to the functioning of the lab, assist with student mentoring and will be encouraged to develop future research projects. There is no teaching requirement or expectation to write research grants but those opportunities can be provided.

Qualifications

Candidates are required to hold a Ph.D. degree by December 2025 in Oceanography, Biology, Computer Science or a related field. Candidates must possess demonstrable experience with the bioinformatic and statistical analyses of high‑throughput RNA‑seq data and familiarity with cell biology. Strong communication skills in English (written and verbal) and quantitative analytical skills are important.

Appointment

The position is for 12 months initially, commencing ASAP and renewable depending on funding availability and performance. The successful candidate will receive training in research collaboration, mentoring, and presentation and publication of results.

Closing date

The position will be open until filled. For first consideration, applications must be received by close of business Oct 3 2025.
