The Job

Under general supervision, the Call Taker receives and evaluates requests for emergency and non-emergency service. This position is responsible for accurately entering fire, emergency medical, and local government calls into the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system for dispatchers. Performs other duties as assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics The Call Taker class is distinguished by responsibility for receiving, assessing, and processing emergency and nonemergency calls involving public safety.

Incumbents utilize protocol assessments and exercise discretion while applying established procedures to ensure accurate and timely response.

Examples of Duties:

  • Receives emergency and non-emergency calls for service and inquiries from the public and enters information in the CAD system.
  • Screens incoming calls to determine nature and urgency.
  • Applies protocol questioning, provides pre-arrival instructions and adjusts urgency as needed according to guidelines.
  • Provides general information to the public regarding regulations and department policies; transfers low acuity, or non-emergency calls to appropriate agencies.
  • Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.
  • Provides other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements

Typing:
Typing speed of 30 WPM Conditions of Employment

  • Examination:
    There will be an evaluation of qualifications based on a review of a skills battery assessment.
  • Background:
    Candidates must undergo and successfully complete a background investigation, including a fingerprint check, and medical examination.
  • Shifts:

    Candidates must be available for all shifts. Incumbents will be required to work rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and evenings, as well as mandatory overtime. Refusal of an assigned shift may result in removal from the eligibility list or termination. Shift differentials may apply.
  • Availability: CONFIRE operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Incumbents must be available to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and graveyard shifts, as required to meet operational needs.
