OverviewUnder general direction of the Information Technology Manager, the role provides expert technical system administration for physical and virtual servers, related technologies, and devices, maintaining and managing the City’s enterprise LAN/WAN/MAN network.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Plan, design, develop, implement, and maintain the City’s wireless, wide, and local area networks and infrastructure.
- Act as an expert systems administrator for physical and virtual servers on the City’s network.
- Evaluate and implement current and emerging technology to enhance reliability.
- Monitor network operations to identify traffic flow, latency, and capacity issues; develop, recommend, plan, and implement new technologies and services.
- Lead or participate in evaluation and selection of hardware and software; coordinate installation and maintenance of servers, clients, circuits, and data communications equipment; configure routers, switches, concentrators, firewalls, and other network devices.
- Monitor network security and performance; identify unauthorized access and potential security risks; recommend and participate in projects to enhance network security.
- Perform DBMS backup/recovery/tuning and monitor data integrity; develop and maintain system security and firewall requirements.
- Investigate, configure, and maintain complex physical technology including wireless, wide, and local area networks, servers, workstations, and printers; develop and implement backup and disaster recovery.
- Investigate, configure, and maintain complex virtual technology including VPNs, VLANs, virtual servers, and workstations.
- Investigate, migrate servers between physical and virtual environments; develop distributed backup/failover/migration plans.
- Investigate and implement Domain‑to‑Domain connections including authentication, access control, firewall, and auditing.
- Investigate, recommend, and configure wireless technology with new and existing networks.
- Document configurations and potential security issues; write system documentation, instructions, and procedural manuals.
- Interact with managers, staff, vendors, and consultants regarding the City’s computer resources and services.
- Provide user support and training for computer, network, e‑mail, security, database, and web systems and hardware.
- Prepare reports of server and system use; maintain inventory records.
- Plan, prioritize, and schedule work and tasks for project team members.
- Assist in performing technical tasks including installing, troubleshooting, testing, repairing, servicing, and customizing computers and related devices.
- Assist in providing computer users with equipment, software programs, and application procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience: Three (3) years of increasing responsibility in development and administration of computer systems, telecommunication systems, and LAN/WAN/MAN networks, and maintenance of file and application servers and network hardware.
Training: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Administration or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and
Certifications:
- State of California driver’s license.
- Cisco CCNA or higher (preferred).
- Microsoft MCSE (preferred).
- Network+ Certification (preferred).
Knowledge: Operational characteristics of computer systems, design, configuration, and troubleshooting of wireless, LAN, WAN, MAN networks; client‑server networking; server administration utilities; industry‑standard hardware and software products; network security practices; project management principles; network performance evaluation; fiber optic, wireless, and copper cable technologies; video streaming; relevant laws and regulations; customer service; occupational safety.
