Job Summary

Position Description

The Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology at The University of Texas at Dallas invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Guitar Studies. This position is a non-tenure track, nine-month, full-time position. Start date August 1, 2026.

Candidates are expected to have experience teaching guitar at the college level in class, ensemble, and individual instruction settings, and academic courses related to the guitar in history and society. A record of previous and current solo or collaborative concert performance activities is preferred.

The successful candidate will teach four classes each semester (or equivalent), with the possibility of teaching at the graduate level. Teaching assignments may include performance-oriented courses (class guitar, applied guitar instruction, and guitar ensemble), and academic courses with topics such as history of the guitar in society, arranging for guitar, or guitar literature.

The position seeks someone with experience and expertise to take on primary administrative responsibility for supporting the Annual Texas Guitar Competition and Festival and the annual guitar concert series. Applicants should expect to take on additional competition/festival related work during the summer, to be compensated with an administrative supplement to the nine-month appointment.

Additional assignments would include mentoring and advising guitar and other music students, committee and service assignments, and opportunities to help shape curriculum and practices during a period of exciting growth and transition.

The appointment commences for the fall 2026 semester.

Qualifications

Minimum

Education and Experience:

A terminal degree (PhD, DMA, or DM) or equivalent in Music or Visual & Performing Arts/Aesthetic Studies with a music emphasis or a related discipline is required prior to employment; those with ABD status will be considered at the application/interviewing stage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.

We are seeking candidates able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

Preferred

Education and Experience:

At least two years of administrative leadership experience at the level of artistic director or higher for a music competition/festival (guitar preferred) and a record of previous and current solo or collaborative concert performance.
