Overview
Summary – The Staff Engineer, Controls and Mechanical is responsible for end-to-end technical leadership of complex engineering programs spanning controls systems, automation, and mechanical design. This role owns system architecture, cross-functional integration, and execution strategy across the full project lifecycle. As a Staff Engineer for the Automation and Control Design group at Celestica, you will be responsible for leading multidiscipline development project teams, project level oversight such as proposal development, system requirements, technical direction, cost, schedule, and will be front facing with internal customers.
This role is a technical and project management leadership role and requires the ideal candidate to be able to support both aspects. Working within a global environment, the staff systems engineer will work with the various global regions to coordinate development efforts and technology road maps promoting interoperability.
Location:
Richardson, Texas, USA (Americas region).
Define and govern system-level architecture across controls and mechanical domains
Lead automation system design including PLCs, robotics, and material handling
Manage engineering scope, schedules, and design reviews
Oversee PLC/HMI/SCADA architecture and industrial networking
Guide mechanical system design for throughput, safety, and maintainability
Lead commissioning, validation, and system ramp-up
Manage vendors, integrators, and technical stakeholders
Drive continuous improvement and innovation initiatives
Experience with ASRS systems and warehouse automation
Robotics integration experience (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, etc.)
Knowledge of functional safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 61508)
Strong systems-thinking and problem-solving capability
Ability to lead cross-functional engineering teams
Effective communication with technical and executive stakeholders
High ownership and execution mindset
Project delivery performance (cost, schedule, scope)
System throughput, uptime, and OEE
Engineering quality and defect reduction
Cycle time and productivity improvements
Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
Occasional travel may be required.
10–15+ years in industrial automation or manufacturing systems
Experience in similar job roles
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering
