RoleDirector of Engineering is a high-impact senior leadership role, responsible for the end-to-end cellular engineering, including mobile network (core and RAN) management as well as deployment and technical management of innovative wholesale solutions in a secure, effective, scalable and commercially viable manner, to customers across the world.
This role manages and leads a geographically dispersed multidisciplinary engineering team covering IP, 4G / LTE, IMS, 5G NSA / SA, NTN, SIM / eSIM, BSS / billing as well as global roaming and wholesale.
Tasks/Responsibilities- Leadership & Management
- Provide strategic and technical leadership for cellular engineering functions.
- Act as the final engineering authority for production readiness, operational acceptance, and NOC handover of all deployed solutions.
- Lead and manage a geographically dispersed engineering team responsible for both open-source and vendor supplied LTE core (MME, SGW, PGW), IMS (VoLTE / VoNR) as well as 5G core (AMF, SMF, UPF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, NRF) infrastructure.
- Ownership for mobile core network infrastructure nodes and their operational management, including roadmaps / lifecycle planning, upgrades, vendor relationships, dimensioning, etc.
- Technical and operational ownership of roaming infrastructure for 4G / LTE as well as 5G NSA / SA, including SEPP as well as TAP and BCE billing.
- Ownership of SIM lifecycle management including IMSI and MSISDN allocations, SIM and eSIM configurations and provisioning, and any other identity parameters on eSIM using OTA platform.
- Ownership of bespoke software development needs.
- Ownership for Limitless Mobile RAN as well as lab toycells used for testing and customer demonstrations.
- Ownership of technical end-to-end process for CDR generation to mediation function needed for rating and billing.
- Planning
- Implement and manage tools and processes to effectively plan and manage utilization of engineering resources.
- Create and manage an engineering delivery roadmap for Limitless Mobile to enhance various platforms for the 5G NSA / SA as well as 6G in the future.
- Ownership of capacity management for mobile core network and RAN.
- Projects
- Technical ownership of solution deployment for contracted wholesale customers as well as relevant internal projects.
- Establish and enforce standard deployment patterns, reference architectures, and baseline configurations for core, RAN, roaming, and wholesale solutions to reduce deployment variability and operational risk.
- Work with assigned Project Manager to lead complex, long-duration (weeks or months) projects ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery.
- Create, implement, and drive High Level Design (HLD), Low level design (LLD) including final documentation.
- Drive the creation of acceptance test plans to be used to verify the solutions during the implementation projects and as customer acceptance criteria.
- Ensure all projects have full documentation and are properly transitioned to the Network Operations Centre (NOC) for post-launch operation.
- Work with assigned Project Manager to conduct a post mortem at the end of each project to identify learnings that can be applied in future projects.
- Operations & Support
- Ensure NOC team is sufficiently trained on new solutions to facilitate effective post-launch delivery and support.
- Maintain ongoing accountability for the operational health of deployed platforms, including recurring incident analysis, trend review, and continuous improvement of monitoring, alerting, and runbooks in collaboration with the NOC.
- Own the identification, prioritization, and remediation of technical depth across network platforms, tooling, and automation, balancing short-term delivery pressure with long-term operational sustainability.
- Ensure Engineering supports NOC by providing Tier 2 support, including critical network incidents and service-impacting issues through a 24x7 rotation program (for emergencies and critical issues).
- Organizational Development
- Establish engineering best practices, governance, documentation, and operational excellence standards.
- Drive the adoption of automation, analytics, and ML-assisted tooling specifically to reduce mean time to detect (MTTD), mean time to restore (MTTR), operational cost, and manual intervention across engineering and NOC workflows.
- Create and execute a plan for continuous development of individuals in the engineering team to ensure ability to take advantage of new technologies.
- Recruit and grow the engineering team as required by the business.
Based on a combination of factors including number of new customer projects successfully deployed, speed of resolution of support issues, training, technical management of a wholesale customer projects etc.
- Percentage of projects delivered on time and within budget.
- Reduction in deployment time through standardization and automation.
- MTTR and severity-1…
