Jabil is seeking a highly experienced SMT Principal Engineer to provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) manufacturing processes. As a Principal SMT Process Engineer, you will drive manufacturing excellence through advanced SMT process development, equipment optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives. You will serve as the technical expert for SMT assembly operations, improving quality, throughput, and overall equipment effectiveness while supporting new product introductions and manufacturing scalability.
This role will support advanced electronics manufacturing operations, drive process optimization initiatives, and serve as the technical authority for SMT equipment, with a strong preference for expertise in Fuji Pick & Place platforms.
- Serve as the SMT technical expert and provide leadership for process development, optimization, and troubleshooting
- Lead SMT equipment selection, programming, validation, and process qualification activities
- Optimize machine performance, placement accuracy, cycle times, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE)
- Support new product introduction (NPI) activities, including process development and line readiness
- Develop and implement process controls utilizing DOE, SPC, CPK analysis, Gage R&R studies, and other statistical methodologies
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, yield, productivity, and cost reduction
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Operations
- Mentor engineers and technicians on SMT best practices and advanced manufacturing methodologies
- Support customer technical discussions and provide subject matter expertise during audits, reviews, and process assessments
- Lead root cause investigations and corrective/preventive action activities
- Establish and maintain process documentation, work instructions, and equipment standards
- Stay current with emerging SMT technologies, equipment advancements, and industry best practices
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline required
- Minimum 10 years of SMT manufacturing and process engineering experience
- Extensive experience with SMT assembly equipment and automated electronics manufacturing processes
- Demonstrated experience leading process improvement and manufacturing optimization initiatives
- Experience supporting NPI programs and high-volume production environments
- Prior leadership or technical mentoring experience preferred
- Expert knowledge of SMT manufacturing processes, equipment, and materials
- Strong proficiency with SMT placement equipment;
Fuji Pick & Place equipment experience strongly preferred - Advanced understanding of solder paste printing, pick-and-place operations, reflow processes, AOI, SPI, and related SMT technologies
- Knowledge of statistical process control, DOE, process capability analysis, and Lean/Six Sigma methodologies
- Strong root cause analysis and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to engage customers and senior leadership
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize effectively
- Proficiency in manufacturing data analysis and process optimization tools
- Master's degree
- 12+ years of SMT process engineering experience
- Deep expertise with Fuji NXT, AIMEX, or related Fuji placement platforms
- Six Sigma Green Belt, Black Belt, or equivalent certification
- Experience using statistical packages like Minitab, or similar tools
- Experience in high-reliability electronics manufacturing environments
- Knowledge of IPC standards and electronics manufacturing best practices
- Experience supporting global manufacturing operations and remote teams
