Position Title
Tax Accountant
Salary Range$65,000 - $70,000, Depending on Qualifications

Job SummaryThe Tax Accountant reports to the Tax Compliance Manager and is responsible for the analysis, record keeping, payments, and reporting functions related to federal and state tax compliance. Responsibilities also include pension fund reconciliation and reporting, the completion of an annual UBIT analysis and private use survey, and communicating with tax authorities and individuals. The Tax Accountant performs reconciliation and reclassification of payroll tax, benefits, and pension liability accounts, and ensures timely and accurate completion of tax documentation and integration of status determination into procurement and payroll processes according to applicable university, state, and federal standards.
Minimum Education and Experience- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field
- 3-5 years experience in accounting principles and practices as they relate to tax accounting, reporting, and compliance
- 3-5 years experience researching and applying tax guidance and preparing and reviewing tax and/or financial statements
- 3-5 years experience with payroll tax reporting
- 1-3 years experience with sales tax and income tax reporting
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Education and Experience
- 3-5 years of experience with the interpretation and application of federal, state, or local tax laws
- Experience with People Soft or similar ERP system
- Higher education payroll experience
To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Determine the federal, state, and local tax liability for all employees and ensure reconciliations and payments are completed by established deadlines
- Complete work associated with the review and production of all new hire and year‑end tax forms including payroll tax filings
- Provide customer service to employees seeking tax related assistance
- Research, analyze, and interpret IRS pronouncements, the Internal Revenue Code, and related laws and state regulations as applicable to University operations
- Participate in pension fund reporting and payment processes including annual financial report footnote disclosures
- Support and initiate process improvement projects related to tax processes and pension fund reporting
- Perform reconciliation and reclassification of payroll tax, benefits, and pension liability accounts
