Job SummaryWork is performed under the general supervision of Command Officer within the Police Department. Supervision is usually available in person or by telephone. Work requires the ability to make frequent decisions and occasional decisions of some significance. Work is reviewed for completeness, accuracy and compliance with departmental and System policy and procedure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct an investigation into the applicant's background to determine suitability for the position sought.
- Review documents pertaining to the applicant's work history, criminal history, financial and credit history, and personal and professional references.
- Interview references: verify corroborative or contradictory information. Use all potential resources such as the internet, public and law enforcement databases, and other applicable agencies. Record all information from assigned investigations. Prepare letters, reports and written summaries of findings; analyze investigation results and draw logical and objective conclusions regarding qualifying or disqualifying information as recognized by the UT Dallas Police Department and UT Police System.
- Confers with hiring managers and makes recommendations regarding suitability for employment.
- Responds to requests for information; assists outside agencies when appropriately requested to provide background information regarding previous applicant background investigation.
- Answers applicant questions and refers requests or questions to managers, as appropriate.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Bachelors degree and 2 years work experience as a full time Background Investigator for a Police Department agency.
PreferredEducation and Experience
Previously worked in a Police Dept as a Background Investigator is preferred. Experience working with a Police Department in a capacity that has exposed the candidate to the structure and chain of command of a Police Department as well as exposure to employment and conduct requirements of a Police Department is preferred.
Other QualificationsTo the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Physical Demands and Working ConditionsDuties may involve driving, walking, standing, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching above head, lifting, lowering, hand-wrist and elbow motion, grasping, and holding. Competently perform under stress when confronted with high priority situations and distractions. Perform a variety of tasks, often changing quickly from one task to another without the loss of efficiency and composure. Carry, drag, lift, pull, and/or push up to 15 pounds of boxes and packages up two flights of stairs.
