Compensation

Overview

The annual base salary range for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary will be determined by factors such as scope, complexity, location, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, and other conditions of employment. Employees are also eligible for performance‑based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Under general supervision, responsible for the profitability, growth and retention of an assigned book of business within a territory that aligns with overall business line objectives. Marketing and underwriting responsibilities typically include underwriting new and renewal business on accounts of moderate complexity, marketing to and developing relationships with agents and brokers, supporting market penetration objectives, and seeking cross‑sell opportunities. The incumbent independently manages the territory and may seek assistance from a senior account executive on more complex accounts.

They take a portfolio view to manage profitability and do not manage others.

What Will You Do?
  • Underwrite primarily moderately complex accounts and risks, using different approaches to maximize profitability (pricing, retention, endorsements, limits, indemnity, security).
  • Use good judgment within own underwriting authority and make recommendations for other accounts to meet business objectives.
  • Initiate collaborative discussions.
  • Effectively manage assigned agents/brokers by developing and maintaining relationships to write and retain accounts consistent with business unit appetite.
  • Frequently meet with agents/brokers and insureds to build and maintain business relationships.
  • Use consultative marketing/sales skills to market products to agents and brokers.
  • Identify and capture new business opportunities and cross‑sell market segment and Travelers products/businesses.
  • Develop an agency sales/business plan and frequently partner with MD to develop region/group sales plan.
  • Negotiate skillfully in difficult situations.
  • Develop and execute a plan to meet business objectives.
  • Anticipate and identify moderately complex underwriting/marketing problems, analyze information, and make timely decisions.
  • Foster collaboration within the business unit and across the enterprise, seeking enterprise‑wide solutions.
  • Assist less experienced employees when appropriate.
  • Coach less experienced staff members; may participate in training of less experienced account executives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • In some lines of business, relevant agent/broker experience may be appropriate.
  • Typically 3‑5 years of relevant account executive experience.
  • Previous excess and surplus/non‑admitted underwriting experience.
Industry/Business Knowledge
  • Understand the local insurance marketplace, industry operations, critical issues and financial drivers.
  • Continuously seek market insight and use knowledge to assist less experienced employees.
Product Knowledge
  • Understand organizational and regulatory rules, policies and procedures, and effectively employ that knowledge.
  • Use acquired skills and knowledge to assist less experienced employees.
Business Perspective
  • Use knowledge of internal and external factors impacting the property and casualty industry to make decisions.
  • Identify current or future problems or opportunities, analyze and compare information, and explore alternative solutions.
  • Understand and use financial information, tools, and expense management principles to maximize profitability.
