Labor and Delivery Nurse Manager Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate Labor & Delivery Nurse Manager to lead our L&D team. This role is responsible for the day-to-day operational and clinical leadership of the unit, ensuring high-quality, safe, and family-centered care for mothers and newborns. The ideal candidate combines strong clinical expertise in obstetrics with proven leadership, staffing, and budget management skills.

Labor and Delivery Nurse Manager

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct oversight and leadership for Labor & Delivery unit operations, staffing, and daily workflow
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop nursing staff; conduct performance evaluations and support ongoing competency development
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (Joint Commission, state health department, EMTALA, etc.)
  • Collaborate with physicians, midwives, anesthesia, and NICU teams to coordinate safe, efficient patient care
  • Monitor and improve quality metrics, patient satisfaction scores, and clinical outcomes
  • Manage unit budget, staffing ratios, and resource allocation
  • Lead in-service education, drills (e.g., OB emergencies, hemorrhage protocols), and unit-based councils
  • Participate in hospital-wide leadership meetings and strategic planning for women's services
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and patient safety
Labor and Delivery Nurse Manager Qualifications
  • BSN required; MSN preferred
  • Minimum 3-5 years of Labor & Delivery clinical experience; 2+ years in a charge or leadership role preferred
  • Current certifications: BLS, NRP, and AWHONN's Advanced Fetal Monitoring (or equivalent)
  • Strong knowledge of obstetric best practices, high-risk OB care, and regulatory standards
  • Excellent communication, conflict-resolution, and team-building skills
  • Prior nurse management or supervisory experience strongly preferred
