Research Technician - SHINDO Lab
The Shindo lab opened in August 2024 and studies the mechanisms of intracellular transport and organization in development and disease. The lab is currently funded by an NIH NIGMS R35 grant, which provides stable funding for this position for multiple years. The successful candidate will use Drosophila melanogaster as a model system to lead an independent research project while also supporting ongoing projects in the lab.
This position is particularly suitable for individuals seeking to gain strong research experience under the direct mentorship of the PI before applying to PhD programs. The lab is equipped with a dedicated fly room, a spinning disk confocal microscope, and a laser scanning confocal/STED microscope co-managed by the UTDImaging Core Facility.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Requires High School graduation or equivalent and six months of experience in scientific research work. Working knowledge of the various types of equipment in use in the laboratory to which assigned. Extreme accuracy in preparing materials and recording data. Normal laboratory conditions. Sometimes requires working with hazardous equipment and materials or in hazardous environments.
Preferred
Education and Experience
- Experience with Drosophila work, including stock maintenance, genetic crosses, and tissue dissections, is highly preferred. Experience in molecular and cell biology techniques, including cloning, WB, immunofluorescence, and fluorescence microscopy.
Other Qualifications
- To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - A Research Technician position is available for a candidate with a strong background in cell biology, genetics, or neuroscience. Responsibilities include conducting cell biology research projects using the Drosophila brain as a model system, providing technical support for laboratory research activities, assisting with lab management-related duties, and performing other duties as assigned.
