Research Assistant I

Join the Center for Vital Longevity at The University of Texas at Dallas and contribute to cutting-edge research in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Rugg. This role offers an exciting opportunity to support innovative research, collaborate with experienced investigators, and gain valuable hands-on experience in a dynamic academic environment.

The Research Assistant I is responsible for collecting, evaluating, and interpreting research data to support principal investigators and other research team members. This position maintains accurate research records, updates laboratory notebooks, and performs data entry into research databases as needed. The role may involve working directly with research participants, including coordinating participant and laboratory schedules and assisting with participant testing when required.

The Research Assistant I also helps maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and work environment, ensuring efficient day-to-day operations.

Additional responsibilities include ordering laboratory and research supplies as directed by senior research staff, supporting project activities, and coordinating the work of others as needed. The successful candidate will stay current with Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements and other applicable regulatory guidelines to ensure compliance with research standards. This is a grant-funded position and continued employment is contingent on funding availability and satisfactory performance.

Minimum

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in one of the basic sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience in customer service or in daily interactions in a public services environment.

Preferred

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or a related field. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment. Detail-oriented and task-focused, with excellent organizational and time-management abilities. Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality when handling sensitive information. Basic computer proficiency, including experience with data entry and standard office software applications.

Dependable, self-motivated, and eager to contribute to scientific research and discovery. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Qualifications:

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides support for a variety of research projects. Conducts research activities in accordance with established research protocols. Research activities may include some or all of the following: participant recruitment and screening, assistance with conducting human EEG, fMRI, and behavioral studies, and data analysis. Assists with the preparation, submission, and maintenance of IRB protocols and related documentation.
