Research Assistant I

The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing in the School of Behavioral & Brain Sciences (BBS) invites applicants for a Research Assistant I position in the Language and Brain Development Laboratory, under the direction of Dr. Ioulia Kovelman. The position supports an NIH-funded project examining dyslexia and language disorders in bilingual children using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) neuroimaging. Research topics include the neurobiology of language and reading, bilingualism, and developmental language impairments such as dyslexia.

This is a grant-funded position and continued employment is contingent on funding availability and satisfactory performance.

Minimum

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in one of the basic sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience in customer service or in daily interactions in a public services environment.

Preferred

Education and Experience:

Experience with fNIRS, fMRI, EEG, or other neuroimaging data collection and analysis. Experience administering standardized language or literacy assessments (e.g., CTOPP, GORT, EVT). Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish. Experience working with child participants in research or clinical settings. Familiarity with IRB protocols and research data management. Background in speech-language pathology, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, or cognitive science.

Qualifications:

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Recruit and schedule child participants and their families. Conduct behavioral and neuropsychological assessments of language and literacy. Administer bilingual (English/Spanish) assessments with child participants. Collect fNIRS neuroimaging data following lab protocols. Assist with fNIRS data preprocessing and coding. Maintain accurate participant records and research documentation. Assist senior lab members with manuscript and grant report preparation. Other duties as assigned. Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with a wide range of constituencies in a dynamic community. Ability to communicate effectively in writing. Must possess strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks concurrently. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines. A strong focus on attention to detail and accuracy is required.

Strong working knowledge of MS Word and Excel is essential.
