JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, drive and operate heavy motorized equipment used in the maintenance of a water distribution, wastewater collection, alley, street, and drainage systems construction and repair. Perform other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Operate vehicles and equipment such as excavators, graders, loaders, rollers, and various other heavy equipment.
- Drive dump truck with heavy equipment to job location(s).
- Operate backhoe’s hydraulic jackhammer to break pavement; uncover water or sewer lines; open trenches to install pipe; excavate for concrete and asphalt replacement.
- Assist crews in construction and repairs when needed.
- Efficiently and safely operate, care for, and maintain appearance of assigned equipment.
- Perform daily preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Follow written and oral job instructions.
- Use good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly.
- Hear clearly and interpret hand signals when working around equipment and in street and alley traffic, using proper safety precautions.
- Lift and/or carry up to 100 pounds; pull, push and/or drag up to 150 pounds of repair equipment or materials, while hooking up heavy equipment, and participating in construction and repairs.
- Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time while driving or participating in repairs.
- Work indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings, and inclement weather.
- Exposure to mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards, dust and odors, using proper safety precautions.
- Serve on standby crew for after-hours emergency work as required.
- Communicate courteously and effectively with other city employees, officials, and the public.
- Pick up trash.
- Keep storage areas clean and orderly.
High School Diploma or GED required. Texas Commercial Driver’s License, Class A, is required or must be obtained within 6 months. Must have or maintain a Class II Waste Water and Class C Water Distribution License or must be obtained within one year of hire.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLSOne year experience required operating heavy motorized equipment. One year of experience required in water/sewer field operations or utility construction for a municipality. Knowledge required of TCEQ and AWWA Rules and Regulations. Must demonstrate skill in the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment, by successfully completing an exercise observed by qualified Heavy Equipment Operators and Supervisors. Knowledge required of mechanical operation of heavy equipment;
safety procedures to follow when excavating; requirements for proper care of equipment. Must be able to operate equipment skillfully and safely. Must have ability to follow oral and written directions.
