Ergon's Paragon Technical Services, in Richland, MS currently has an opening for an Asphalt Emulsion Chemist I.

Ergon is a family‑owned oil and gas company based in the Jackson, MS area with facilities across the US. The Asphalt Emulsion Chemist I is responsible for evaluating asphalt emulsions and binders for specifications and for product development and enhancement of bituminous materials used in the asphalt paving industry.

Functions Of The Job

An Asphalt Emulsion Chemist I evaluates the properties of asphalts, emulsions, and emulsifiers to investigate their applications in the paving industry. The ideal candidate possesses the ability to multitask and stay on top of issues in a deadline‑driven environment, displays effective time management and organizational skills, and takes ownership and accountability of work to ensure it is neat, clean, and accurate.

This role works on projects of limited complexity in a support capacity, while the emulsion team leader and the Technical Director closely manage the work.

Responsibilities Include The Following
  • Function effectively in a team environment.
  • Qualified in all aspects of emulsion and related asphalt testing.
  • Perform laboratory work while maintaining safety as a top priority.
  • Communicate with the Emulsion Team Leader and Technical Director on the status of all work in the lab.
  • Verify lab data is accurate and re‑evaluate questionable results as needed.
  • Review all completed paperwork for accuracy regarding data, specifications, and formulations used; review and create reports as needed.
  • Maintain an up‑to‑date, accurate, and thorough lab notebook that meets all requirements.
  • Keep current with applicable testing requirements and standards (ASTM, AASHTO).
  • Maintain lab equipment clean, calibrated, and in working condition.
  • Ensure the lab is clean and organized at the end of every day.
  • Alert the team leader when the lab supply inventory is low to maintain appropriate levels.
  • Maintain knowledge and compliance with Ergon Asphalt & Emulsion Inc., Environmental Health & Safety rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s in Chemistry, Engineering, or Science.
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Typically 0–2 years of experience.
